AIBU?

to be so upset - after all it's only a haircut

4yo DD had shoulder length blonde ringlets - until this morning. She has never had her haircut and it has taken more than 4 years to get her hair this length.
Then, this morning, disaster! We went to a friends house and 2 little girls decided to play hairdressers in said friends bedroom, cue kids paper scissors and one cropped head! Sad I can't believe how upset I am by this, it is a mess! understatement of the year Hairdresser can't do anything about the front, less than an inch long in most places, in some places more like an eighth of an inch. The back is better than the front, with the length in the centre untouched but the sides have all gone. (have been advised to keep the length for now and tie it into a very sad looking ponytail). I have been crying and think that I am being ridiculous, but everytime I look at her I think she looks like a shorn sheep. So AIBU or would you feel the same way?

I cried when my daughter did it as well-I think it was the shock, plus the guilt that she'd got hold of scissors.

Funnily enough just yesterday DD cut a huge wedge out of her fringe.

I must admit the first thing I did was laugh, take a photo and upload it onto facebook! A friend of mine asked me what I was going to do. I told her I was going to take as many embarrassing photos as possible and make them public when she turns 18.

Having a bad day, first the haircut, I've got the worst headache ever and now I can't get my profile to go public! [sobs]

My DD's hair took a long time to grow to start with but now she's 5 it grows much quicker. Let it grow and then ask the hairdresser to give her something short but feminine for Sept and the first day at school photos :)

OP go to top right where it says "my mumsnet"
Click on "my profile"
Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and select "yes - make my profile visible to all MNers"

I don't think you can do this on a phone so that might be why.

And YANBU to be upset by the way, when it's such a drastic change Flowers

Eeek! When my twins were 3 my ds shaved a section out of my dd's hair I was gutted as she had (has) awful cradle cap and the top grows really slowly, grew back eventually and is now another funny anecdote

Op, apparently yes he was asking to have it cut whilst in the hairdressers BUT he's only 8 and she should have asked me first. I didn't say anything to her about it as it was too late. It's now back to its crowning glory!

Aww I think she looks quite cute actually from the front. It'll grow faster than you think anyway Smile

YANBU.

I would be devastated if that happened to DD. She's nearly 7 now and her hair is half way down her back, but it's curly at the ends so looks shorter. However, she was pretty much bald until she was two so her hair has taken forever to grow to the length it is.

She has had this explained to her and since she started school has been firmly instructed to keep scissors away from her hair and not to let friends near it with scissors - I've read too many threads like this here! Wink - and she understands that only Grandma, the hairdresser and I are allowed to take scissors to her hair. Grin

She looks sweet from the front - especially in the pink t-shirt one. I'd cut my losses and take the back off though Grin

She has lovely thick hair for a three year old. That'll grow back nicely.

You will laugh about it when she's grown up - just not yet!

Oh shes beautiful! Could you cope with a lovely short pixie cut? I bet it would suit her and they can look very girly!

Length in a ponytail and Loads of clips for her, patience and a pint of gin for you! Once the front is long enough to be a short fringe it'll look fine, by the time school starts it'll be barely noticeable. My friends sister did this in about 1985,I remember it like it was yesterday :) her mum gave her a pixie cut and clipped daisies in it, it was actually gorgeous!

OMG-that's just what my daughter did!

Her's wasn't so long in the back & I just cut it straight acrossjust under her ears!

diddl · 08/08/2013 17:16

I agree with limited.

The pic of her in the pink tshirt where it looks as if it's just under her ears-would look fab that length imo-& the rest will seem to catch up faster.

She's gorgeous-such a cute, cheeky face!

Have now seen the profile.
Ok, so its not great. But its not that bad.
It probably is to you, because you know what it looked like before. But to us, as a first looker, its not that bad.
One suggestion. You should go to the hairdresser, explain what has happened and get them to even it up a bit. I think that will make it look a lot better. They will have heard it all before, and will make it look better.

Aw she's lovely Grin and, with such a sweet little face, I think a short style would suit her and at least look as if you meant it to be that way!

I am sure it won't take too long to grow back. My DD was more or less bald until she was two and then took ages to get any decent length but it did eventually thicken up and start growing faster - she's 13 now and has gorgeous long hair which I envy!

(Mine also played hairdressers once but, as I was standing right next to her at the time, I was able to grab the kitchen scissors off her before she did too much damage but, oh my goodness, can't they move fast when they have an evil plan in mind!)

You are right to be upset.

But - keep repeating

My child's hair will regrow
My child lost her hair having fun
One day we will both laugh about this (and take pictures)

I've seen the pics now. It's not nearly as bad as I imagined, but I still think it's OK to be a bit upset.

I hope the shock has worn off a bit now and you're starting to get used to it!

Have been to the hairdressers and they suggest tying what's left of the back in a ponytail and clipping the short sides back (to look as if they are tied back) until they grow a bit longer and then have it all cut into a bob. I'm not sure whether to do this or try for a pixie style (with a difference). I'm a bit more relaxed about the whole thing today.
