To be so fed up that dp keeps getting ill and giving it to me?

I know I am being unreasonable really, but dp seems to be constantly ill. Sometimes I seem to bypass it but other times I'm catching whatever it is he's had.

This is the third time this year I've caught his bugs. Christmas he was ill, by new year so was I. Easter was a total write off due to a really horrible flu type virus that seemed to last forever. Then here we are again, I thought I'd withstood his latest sore throat/cold, but no I'm ill again. It's ALWAYS during time off work too.

I think we need to boost his.our immune sstems.

Might sound odd but have you got mold in your house? Or damp? DH and I lived in a place with damp and mold and we were ALWAYS ill...

Beautyatethebeast · 05/08/2013 20:26

Also in all seriousness, is it normal for healthy adults to be getting ill so often i.e 4 and 5 times a year. I don't think (touch wood) that even ds gets ill this much and also seems to cope with it a lot better than we do.

Cross post, there is no mould but the window seal have gone a bit so they get condensation.

Is he run down?

Sometimes you do just have a bad run with minor illnesses over a number of months.

I think Echinacea (?spelling) is meant to boost your immune system.

Beautyatethebeast · 05/08/2013 20:29

If I disappear it.s just because I'm going for a bath.

Dp has been like this for years, he reckons it's since he had glandular fever.

Will take any immune system boosting tips.

Aren't you waterproof? Tee hee.

Wolfiefan · 05/08/2013 20:47

Echinacea. Stoooopid question but if he is coughing/sneezing is he using a tissue and disposing or putting his hands to his face and then not washing his hands. How healthy are your diets? Lots of fresh fruit and veg?

Could you sleep in separate bedrooms when either of you is ill to avoid breathing in each other's germs?

My tips are: Make sure you don't share towels. When someone is ill, use disinfectant spray or wipes on things like door handles and remote controls. (I do this once a day when someone has a cold or infectious illness and try to avoid touching the same things, so the one who is curled up on the settee sneezing gets the remote control and the other avoids it and it gets wiped with disinfectant once a day). Don't pick up a dirty cup that he's used. If you have more than one toilet maybe each use a different one when you're ill. Germs are left behind on hard surfaces and you can pick them up. It sounds a bit weird when I put it in writing, but I used to catch everything my ds caught and nowadays I'm super careful about what I touch and don't usually catch his colds.

Or can I be the first to say LTB? Grin

There was a really good New Scientist article a few years back about actual things that support your immune system.

The only ones I can remember are: bio yoghurt & sleep.

teacherandguideleader · 05/08/2013 20:53

He could be right re: the glandular fever. My body took a real knock following meningitis - I think severe illnesses do affect the immune system. This year I have been taking vitamins and have changed my diet. Touch wood, things have been much improved - I'm getting ill less and therefore so is DP.

RegainingUnconsciousness · 05/08/2013 21:16

Here's that article

Although sadly I think you need to subscribe to read the whole thing.

get some water kefir grains
They are a probiotic culture and I swear since I started making it I have not had a day's illness in about 8 months, not even a cold.
water kefir and immunity

I would really recommend taking zinc. I used to have several colds a year and get really unwell for weeks at a time. If I take zinc when I feel a slight sore throat or a bit sneezy, it goes away before it develops into a cold.

You don't take it every day of the year - just when you feel a very slight inkling of a cold, then take it for a few days.

My Dp had glandular fever and it really did knock his immune system for years.
Every cold or sniffle would lead to him being unable to get out of bed for potentially weeks, and any strenuous exercise would bring on some sort of illness, which was sad as the poor boy went from being a bit of a fitness freak, to a sad, skinny thing who felt he couldn't do anything.
It does get better though, 5 years on he's pretty much back to normal, and a lot happier for it obviously.
Glandular fever is bloody awful.
