I was parking my car in Sainsbury this morning and getting dc out when a woman walking past started muttering about 'stupid people with big cars', I frowned and she said 'well, why do you need such a big car?' I ignored her as didn't want an argument in front of dc, also I thought I've paid the road tax, got mot etc and it's a legal car, why should I have to justify myself to her?

Fwiw I never had a big car until I had dcs, now I love it due to going on holidays with the car, transporting furniture, shopping and dcs. It's also economical and diesel and ten years old, with many more years in it (Volvo) so surely much better for the environment than alot of the small cars that are sold now, designed to become obsolescent in five years?

Sorry for the ramble, aibu to think if you've paid your tax and insurance and mot it's no one else's business what car you drive?

You should've asked why she needed such a big gob.

Big cars are better for transporting dead bodies :)

It isn't really although it can be quite annoying if you're in a car park with small spaces and its busy and someone drives in some big Nissan navara type thing in getting in the way and then making it hard to park in any of the adjoining spaces. Small cars are more appropriate sometimes.

Try getting 3 car seats in the back of a small car. I only have issues with the people who seem to buy a land rover round here then can't reverse meaning I have to go back miles on the country roads only to discover a huge lay by just behind them that they'd refused to reverse into. But that's more a bad driving issue rather than car size.

I don't think it was any of her business but also don't understand why you think small cars will become obsolete in five years?!

The only time I would say she was okay to say anything is if you were hopeless at driving it but if you aren't then drive whatever you want!

I don't suppose this was Solihull, was it?? I had something similar happen to me on Saturday & I don't even drive a car that's that big!

I must admit though that I did ask why she was being so rude to me & she just kept muttering about big cars!

Loopytiles · 05/08/2013 21:44

What kind of volvo?

ENormaSnob · 05/08/2013 21:49

I would have mentioned her big arse.

MollyBerry · 05/08/2013 21:52

tmae op means built in obsolesce of small cars is shorter than big ones so she's being economical in the long run. Not that small cars will be obsolete in 5 years

littlewhitebag · 05/08/2013 22:35

I too have a Volvo. I need it to transport my dog. I bloody love it.

Sleepyhoglet · 06/08/2013 01:36

Did you see what car she drove?

Stinkyminkymoo · 06/08/2013 08:36

I had some one say that to me, I have a shock horror 4x4 and I told her it was very hard to tow a horse box with a fiesta. Silly cow!

EastwickWitch · 06/08/2013 08:46

If you were parked over 2 lines or sticking out of the bay I think a bit of muttering is OK. There are some very inconsiderate road users.
If you were just getting out of your normally parked car YANBU.
Your car, your choice & nothing to do with her.
