To think that if I buy 500g of something

I should get 500g worth? Just bought 2 packs of Quorn mince, both 500g, as they were on offer in the supermarket. Decided to batch cook both so we've got some easy meals in the next couple of weeks. One pack has 410g and the other 425g! I'm cross and feel cheated. At least when i buy actual beef mince I get what i pay for. Anyone else find this with food weights these days? Money is tight and being cheated out of 80grams of my dinner is not on!

Keep the outer packaging, and receipt. Contact the Quorn peeps, a number on the pack somewhere I am sure. Grrr. Cook up your meal anyway.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/08/2013 16:01

Weren't you cheated out of 165g or are you sharing?

IDismyname · 04/08/2013 16:03

I think they'll get out of it by saying that the whole thing - including the packaging - weighs 500g.

However, I agree - if you buy 500g of something, then you expect the 'something' to weigh 500g!

RightsaidFreud · 04/08/2013 16:05

mrsterry yes, 165g total! Maths skills went out the window there. fished the empty bags out the bin already. Will contact marlow foods (Quorns owners) tomorrow!

Well I've just checked the 300g of quorn mince in my freezer and it weighed 312g including the packet. Is there any chance your scales are wrong?

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/08/2013 16:08

Check other items on your scales to see if they are correct. If you are sure of their accuracy, complain to Trading Standards, as it is illegal to sell short weight.

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/08/2013 16:08

whatsonyourplate got your Quorn RightsaidFreud. Cah.

RightsaidFreud · 04/08/2013 16:12

Good point whatson will go check.

Well, my 500g of beef mince is registering 500g and my 1kg of flour is 1kg too. Damn you Quorn! At least I can see that some of my missing 165g has ended up with whaton

OP posts:
Munchmallow · 04/08/2013 16:16

But surely 500g of Quorn should be 500g of Quorn not Quorn and packaging. I would contact trading standards.

SusuwatariToes · 04/08/2013 16:19

Did you weigh it before or after cooking?

RightsaidFreud · 04/08/2013 16:20

Before.

OP posts:
IsisOhIsis · 04/08/2013 16:20

I thought that "e" symbol next to the weight meant "on average" so some will be slightly over and some slightly under? Yours seems excessive though

gaggiagirl · 04/08/2013 16:21

You have been robbed! E mail them right now their customer service is very good. I just used a 500g bag for batch cooking myself I bloody wish I had weighed it now Angry

KirjavaTheCat · 04/08/2013 16:22

This happened to me with icing sugar last week Angry

SusuwatariToes · 04/08/2013 16:23

Yes, 410g is 16% less than advertised. I don't think that should be allowed to come under "slightly under". I would complain.

RightsaidFreud · 04/08/2013 16:24

Quorn, icing sugar, I wonder what else this is happening with. I don't really want to be weighing all my food. It was purely on the off chance i happened to weigh it this time!

OP posts:
RightsaidFreud · 04/08/2013 16:27

ha, hilariously, the front of the packaging states 'feeds 6-7'. Really Quorn?

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 04/08/2013 16:32

I suppose your scales are probably out because I can't imagine that whoever makes Quorn would take the risk of short weight. It's pretty serious to do that, I think. But you might be right.

I'd mention it, because I'm my mother's daughter Grin And you're right; money is tight and there's no shame in counting pennies.

You made me smile because I've just got back from Sainsbury's and noticed the cashier forgot to scan my 80 Nectar points voucher.

I'm not going to moan about him because it was a mistake; but I'll be at customer services tomorrow with a smile.

throckenholt · 04/08/2013 18:38

are you a twitter user ? A friend had a similar problem with a pizza (not weight but not up to expected standard) - they tweeted about it, and got a very quick response - I think they ended up with a free replacement and a £15 voucher.
