I think know i drink too much. Its becoming a bit lot of a habit. DH hardly drinks at all, he has the occasional bottle/can of lager. I drink wine, most nights. Recently up to a bottle a night but not every night. There are 3 nights a week that i don't drink at all but the other 4 i generally drink between 1/2 a bottle or a full bottle. I like it. But realise its not good for me. Feel a bit Blush about it really. I think DH would prefer me to cut down and we are ttc so i would stop altogether if we were sucessful. Just wondering what is normal for others?

You don't have to explain yourself op I think people are all different when it comes to alcohol.

There was a programme on tv ages ago that showed an experiment with monkeys. The scientists put a bowl full of water out and a bowl full of alcohol. Some monkeys had no interest in the alcohol and didn't touch it, others would go back to the alcohol periodically, the last group would sit by the alcohol drinking it until they were completely pissed!

As long as you don't fall into the latter group you're fine! Just stop while your trying to conceive/pregnant/looking after young children. There is nothing wrong with enjoying alcohol as long as your not using it as a crutch for something else. Just like there is nothing wrong from abstaining.

It's not as if I've always been a saint though either - I've been leglessly drunk on a number of occasions over the years, usually through not paying attention to how much I was having at the time. But I hate being hungover and my tolerance is less and less these days, so it's just not worth it. I get liking a drink, but not the dependence, the need for it.

My poison is food. It's both my reward and solace, my medication and my self-punishment. I should try taking some of my own advice and applying it in that area...

*you're stupid pad thing!

aldiwhore thank you, you somehow make me feel less of a freak! But you are right of course. I like the taste of the wine, and like feeling warm, confident and slightly fuzzy.

I think i will start with no work night drinking (mon - thurs) and then allow 2 bottles for fri - sun. It will be less than usual. And then cut sundays out which will take me down to one bottle for fri/ sat which is reasonable isn't it?

I have the odd bottle of cider. I went out OH about a month ago and had about 5 cocktails, that was plenty and certainly more than i had drunk in a long time.

Try getting some smaller wine glasses. I got some cheap ones from Tesco which only hold 95ml wine. I limit myself to 1 of these glasses on a week night, and 2 of these glasses on Fri/Sat nights and only open 1 bottle of wine per week. These days I often open a bottle of wine realise that I still haven't finished it a month or so later.

I drink about 2 units once a month. Any more than that goes straight to my head, probably because I don't drink much. But I seem to be in a minority of the people I know. I would be really fat if I drank much and I will always pick chocolate over wine c

I don't drink at all. I'm fed up of people asking why I don't drink.

Wellwobbly · 03/08/2013 21:24

If you are TTC don't drink alcohol at all. It affects the chomosomes in your eggs and Feotal Alcohol Syndrome can happen at very low levels.

What is also seldom known is that these absnormalities go into the next generation and that men TTC have their genetic material in sperm affected as well.

(Just done it in lectures.)

Also OP drinking is a habit. So stop, and after 2 weeks the receptors in your brain will stop screaming for a drink and fade away. Fizzy water etc are a good distraction.

Good luck! On stopping and TTC
