......as they're all the same.

Hammy acting, evil forces, battling evil forces, resolution. And the odd British acting heavyweight along the way.

"As an adult i would never read a kids book or watch a kids film. I just think it's weird to do so."

What a narrow minded attitude. Some books transcend ages though. I enjoyed reading the His Dark Materials trilogy, and have recently read The Hunger Games.

Either you don't have children or your children aren't old enough to be taken to the cinema or be read to. Either way you are missing out. Children's films are so clever these days because they contain material or humour designed to appeal to adults as well as children. And I have so enjoyed reading books like The Magic of the Faraway Tree, the Narnia books, Roald Dahl, among others to DD when she was smaller. You are missing out on a lot.

thebody · 04/08/2013 10:01

Cedric Diggory's dad shouting 'my boy' always me cry too.

Bunbaker, totally agree your post.

as a parent you spend hours watching kids movies and reading kids books. be a very strange and detached parent if you didn't!

CircassianLeyla · 04/08/2013 10:25

We have only read the first one and I have seen bits of all the films I think. DC watched them on loop for a while.

DS1 had a period of really not reading and when I got a Kindle I downloaded the first one and he had no idea how big, small print etc the was.

We haven't yet read any if the others but we do have the next two.

My own reason for not watching/reading etc is that fantasy just isn't really my cup of tea but I am glad I have been exposed to them.

SilverOldie · 04/08/2013 11:34

I have no children but still enjoyed reading and watching Harry Potter. I cried when Dobby died, why can't we have house elves?

FrenchRuby · 04/08/2013 11:46

I also sobbed like a baby when Hermione makes her parents forget her, and when Dobby dies. Also the scene in TGOF when Diggory Sr runs over to Cedric's dead body and shouts "my boy, my boy"

Oh I'd forgotten about that bit! I can't watch that bit when other peoole are watching too because I cry like a baby. It's so sad :(

Flobbadobs · 04/08/2013 11:53

Have seen all of them except DH part 1, I keep missing that one.
Loved all of them except number 6 although the last part from when Dumbledore dies is good.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 04/08/2013 13:41

I cry when Hedwig, Sirius and Dobby die and when Amos Diggory cries out for his dead son Sad I also cried when George gets his ear blown off and at various irrational points when they're being sweet or uncommonly kind to one another. I have the emotional maturity of a small trout.

However, I do agree that it's largely derivative. You often hear people saying "how did she come up with these ideas, the names and such?" which is daft as they've very strongly rooted in mythology and legend. The complexity of some of the sub plots though and the interlocking nature of them is more impressive in my mind.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 04/08/2013 14:27

I read adult books (not that kind Grin) when I was a kid so why can't I read kids' books as an adult?? And as Bunbaker says some books and films are for all ages.

Btw I wrote my masters dissertation on HP (and got a distinction Smile)

NuggetofPurestGreen · 04/08/2013 14:32

"The complexity of some of the sub plots though and the interlocking nature of them is more impressive in my mind."

Exactly diseases I remember being genuinely surprised at end of Prisoner of Azkaban (Sirius reveal) in a way that is very unusual for a children's book or even any book. Really didn't see it coming. Think it all gets a bit messy in the last book some of the complexity doesn't stand up to scrutiny (wandlore stuff etc).

soontobeburns · 04/08/2013 14:32

I love Harry Potter. I prefer the books as I think the movies leace too much out like the maurders etc. But they are still great.

Im the same age as the actors (23) and grew up with the books and movies. I still remember getting DH at midnight and finishing in at 7 30am and wishing people would hurry up and finish so I could talk about it.

It also helped my English for a couple of years I was addicted to HP RPGs and would sit and write stories. I love it.

MrsKoala · 06/08/2013 04:49

Bunbaker - I can't wait to read Roald Dahl again - but i think that's because i read them all as a child. I'm not into magic and stuff like that (hate lord of the rings etc) so i know i wouldn't like Harry Potter. I also have read some of Rowlings writing and think she write really badly. Terribly clunky. So not for me at all. But i find adults into disney and stuff really creepy. I don't mind films which appeal to both Adults and Children (Pixar stuff like the incredibles and Toy Story). My ds is only 10 months so i may change my mind when i have to read/watch stuff with him tho :)

Can't be doing with adults into twilight either. Grin

SweetTeaVodka · 06/08/2013 05:10

MrsKoala, I think all Disney (and a lot of other kids films from other studios) have things for the grown ups too, not just the Pixar stuff. Lots of jokes and things that went completely over my head as a child, certainly.

But then I am biased as I love Disney, HP, abd various other "childrens" things (MLP, anyone). Luckily, I work with children so I have always been able to use them as an excuse Grin

McNewPants2013 · 06/08/2013 06:15

Love Harry potter, if I didn't have DC I would have been in the cinema for the midnight screening.

I can put any DVD on and I know which one i am watching.

The books are a lot better :)

buzzgirly · 06/08/2013 06:32

YANBU

The films start off ok and gradually get worse. I'm sure this is because Daniel Radcliffe is terrible in them! The last one was particularly shite, and I'm a massive Harry potter fan but it was so crap I fell asleep in cinema!

SconeInSixtySeconds · 06/08/2013 07:31

Mrskoala, my dc actively dislike all of Roald Dahl except George's Marvellous Medicine.

I once found The BFG in a flowerbed, half buried.

Lots of HP makes me cry, the resurrection stone moment when Lily tries to touch Harry :( Amos crying over Cedric (when he had been so pfb earlier) Hermione obliviating her parents (double sob) Neville visiting his parents in the hospital. :( Dobby :(
