To think my window cleaner is trying to steal money?

Ive had a window cleaner for 3 years. They come from a small company. I used to pay whoever cleaned the window cash at the door or they'd come and pick it up in the evening. Then about 6 months ago the boss came in the evening and said he'd prefer me to pay by bank transfer as not all the money he's expecting has been arriving with him and he's not sure which one of his employees is responsible. Actually paying by bank transfer suits me better as I can do it online when i have time and no need to have cash in house etc.

Today the man who cleaned the windows tried to tell me that the bank details had changed and I could no longer pay by transfer. I told him to ask the boss to email me the new bank details and he said "I am the boss, I'll come and collect it later this evening".

I know he's not the boss. AIBU to pay by bank transfer and phone boss man to tell him what has happened?

Just had a phone call from Mr. Boss Man. He knows nothing about changing his bank account details and is qutie happy for me to pay by bank transfer as normal. Appears he's had 4 or 5 similar contacts from customers this week and he tells me "You won't be getting that window cleaner again we've had a parting of ways". Then he asked me "do you know anyone honest who wants a job as a window cleaner?"

Feel sorry for my window cleaner losing his job in current climate but there's a bit of me that thinks just maybe he should have thought of that first :(

window cleaner must be pretty dim to think he would get away with pulling a stunt like that !

sad, because I know lots of families are strapped for cash and very desperate, and I can imagine his wife being worried if he lost his job, but really, theft is theft & fraud is fraud - you do not have to resort to these things!

how the hell did he think he would possibly get away with it! It's bonkers.

I wouldn't waste your time feeling sorry for him, he is suffering the consequences of his own choices. He was trying to steal.

Ooh spooky this happened to me but minus the bank details thing.

Started noticing the window cleaners were coming a bit often and eventually worked out they'd 'split up' but were trying to keep their old customers without actually saying anything.

I thought they'd eventually start wrestling each other off their ladders or something but un luckily one of them must have given up before it got to that point.

Maybe window cleaning is quite dog eat dog. Who knew?
