to regret buying an ipod?

I got a Nano a month or so ago, and quickly discovered that itunes is shite. It slowed my laptop down to a crawl, even when itunes wasn't running. I got a new laptop and things worked more smoothly.

Until the other day when the ipod wouldn't sync. It will charge from the usb port, but is not recognised by Windows as being connected to the laptop.

I initially thought it was a software issue, but I tried it on the old pc running a different version of Windows and same problem.

So, it seems that the problem is the ipod itself.

I have to schlep it into Manchester to the Apple store, but you need an appointment to do that, and the next available appointment is Wednesday evening. I can just about make it if I clean all my houses that day really fast. I may just have to cancel the last client, which will cost me £30 into lost income. I can't go on a later day unless I wait another week, as I go on holiday on Thursday.

This thing has been such a pain in the ass!

Have you tried resting it OP? My ipod has a small pinhole button on the bottom, pressing it in resets the whole thing. It may work then?

Sounds like a pain in the arse, can you not just send back and get a replacement if it's in warranty?

There's no pinhole. Factory reset requires being connected to iTunes.

I suppose I could send it away to Apple, but it would likely be faster and easier to go into the store. I just wish I could do that tomorrow.

I got it from Argos and can't find my receipt. It's not needed for a warranty issue, but Argos would want it to do an exchange, I should think. Plus, I can't know for certain that the device is the problem, which taking to the Apple store would confirm most easily...

Reset it. There should be instructions on the Apple Website so you can reset it without connecting to iTunes.

That's odd, mines a nano and definitely has one, but it is an old nano so perhaps they stopped. Does it not connect at all? No messages whatsoever?

Box, I have tried that. Very hard as the step by step instructions are for other versions of Windows. But, before going into issues of conflicting third party software, drivers, etc, I checked the other laptop and had the same problem, even though the version of Windows was different, and presumably the other software, as well. I know that the old laptop worked for the ipod a couple of weeks ago, so this sudden issue doesn't make sense for both machines.

I can do a basic reset on the ipod, but not the one that actually does a factory restore. That does seem to require itunes.

I called the Arndale Apple store and they were nice. Agreed that the two laptops did indicate that the ipod is the problem. Unfortunately, I need an appointment to take it in. He said that if I wanted to pop by on another day, or hang out all afternoon in hopes of a no show, I could, but it would be unlikely to happen.

That said, I may spend Tuesday afternoon there in hopes of not having to cancel a Wednesday client.

Mia, the nano charges, but it doesn't show up in the computer. Like, under "my computer" it's not visible. Other devices will show up on the same usb ports.

If its not recognized by the laptop do you need to reinstall the device driver?

Hmm sounds like a problem with the USB then which means it probably will need replacing. I'd take another look for that receipt OP. Have you tried this: support.apple.com/kb/ts1369

What is the device driver? If it were a problem of that sort, why has it happened on both laptops?

I'm sure that the receipt is gone. It got thrown out accidentally. But, the warranty is attached to the device registration, so it's ok with Apple. Just not Argos.

if you bought it from Argos, you can use a bank statement as proof of purchase if you paid by card.

If an item is faulty you will not need your receipt as it is not fit for purpose, I have had a charger that suddenly stopped working bought from Argos and they just exchanged it. Although maybe as an ipod is so much more expensive they may want the receipt

IT'S THE CABLE!

I borrowed a client's usb cable to check if that were the issue, and it synced just fine. This is the new type of usb that the iPhone 5 and latest nano have, so none of my other usb cables were compatible. I'll just buy one at Maplin, as well as a wall charger thing since those also have to be specific to these cables.

I knew it was a possibility that the cable was the issue, but I was dreading the worst.

Stupid that I would have had to wait a week.

I just bought an iPod Classic and I'm apprehensive about having to download itunes for my laptop, it's so bulky. I wish there was an option to remove the store and just download the stuff relating to the ipod itself.

I got a generic Mp3 which doesn't tie you to iTunes. it is far simpler to just deag and drop misic files. I'd be tempted to take iPod nack and het one that doesn't need proprietary software.

I was just about to post that you could try the cable but I see you already did! I bought a second hand ipod Classic from Ebay and at first it synced fine, but after 2 or 3 syncs it stopped working.

I went through every bit of advice from the online bobblehat forums, including a reset, buying a powered USB port in case my ancient PC's ports were overloaded, everything. I thought it couldn't be the cable as it had worked once or twice just fine. But it was, so I bought a new one and now I can sync at will.

Still hate sodding i-Tunes though.

Yeah, I bought a non-Apple cable and wall charger (because a lightning connection won't work with a regular USB wall charger! You have to have one that will work for lightning connections. Something to do with the device will try to sync, and when it can't, just shut itself off from the power source.) I bought the other brand because it was cheaper and the fellow who sold it to me said that a lot of people bring back the Apple ones that came with their iPhone 5 because they're fragile.

I'm OK with iTunes, now. I'm not thrilled about it, but it runs OK on my new laptop and I'm used to the layout of it, now. Amazon sells music a bit cheaper, but the main thing I need is to pay with gift cards. I like to buy them with pocket money and not put anything on a credit card. BTW, getting started with iTunes is very hard to do without a credit card. It's possible, but I had to Google how to do it and it took some doing to get the option to not enter a CC#. I think that's pretty damned cheeky of them, myself.
