Single person no dc receives £71.50 jsa
In some areas has to pay council tax £5.40 per week.
Single person with one child under 5 receives approx £154 per week and doesn't ha e to pay councilt tax.
Aibu to think this is so wrong.
After all most bills like utilities are only going to differ slightly.

My point thought is that my sisters local council il are treating people differently. They are not charging some people who have traditionally not had to pay. But are charging others. £5.50 doesn't sound like alot but it is alot when you have such a limited income.

Your issue isn't the benefits system but the way your sisters council is administating the changes to the council tax system. They choose who to support and by how much, no its not right but its not the fault of the lone parent.

Fifi2406 · 31/07/2013 16:51

Ohhhhh I read the whole thread, that's unfair making a person in one situation pay it and not another. I think everyone pays at least something here

Whothefuckfarted · 31/07/2013 16:52

No one of working age gets their council tax paid in full now. It's now called council tax support and everyone of working age has to pay a percentage.

You need to update yourself with the facts.

If you are very hard up you can appeal the small charge but there's only so much money to go round..

kinkyfuckery · 31/07/2013 17:13

Are you still banging out about this?

From another thread that I missed at the time, you say your sister left school straight into a job she worked for 25 years then hasn't worked since then and is well into her 50s now? So she hasn't worked in well over 10 years? And is pissed off as she was expecting to retire soon but they've "moved the goalposts"? Why the fuck hasn't she gotten a job in 10-15 years??

martini84 · 31/07/2013 17:25

She has had jobs in the last 10 to 15 years. However, they haven't been long term. Companies have gone out of business etc.
Only posted another thread as I am actually quite worried about her. She has had an eating disorder in the past and is not as physically strong as she once was. Certainly not fit enough to do 10 hour shifts in a factory which is the only work she is really qualified for. Saw her yesterday and I am starting to worry that because she now has no savings she is going to go without food to pay her bills. Also has ocd issues which doesn't help.
I am getting her bits and pieces here and there but it's not enough.

I often wondered why a single person only got 25% discount but it was explained that unlike poll-tax, it's half a charge on the property and half on occupancy so on occupancy a single person has that halved.

I like the, "dunno - because we can" reply. About right Hmm
