to want anyone who has ever said "Just get a job" to look at my DS tonight?

Bogeyface · 29/07/2013 22:03

I want everyone who has ever implied that people on JSA just dont try hard enough to see the utter joy on my sons face tonight.

Not counting 2 years at college (when he was looking for a part time job), he has been job hunting for 5 years. He has been working all of those years in charity shops in order to have something on his CV. He has tried and tried and tried.

Today he got offered a job, ok so it is telesales at minimum wage, annoying you all as you are getting dinner ready, but dammit, its a job.

I cant tell you how happy he is, he hasnt stopped talking since he got in, hasnt stopped smiling and is already planning how he and his GF can finally plan to move in together after 3 years of wanting to. She works FT but he refused to consider living with her without a job.

"Just get a job" "Just try harder" "There are plenty of jobs out there" "If people really wanted a job then they would get one"

If you have ever said that then I hope you realise how wrong you have been.

Congrats to op!

Lilian, my disabled dd got lousy gcse grades and did a vocational NVq 2 course. After that she did a full time gcse retake course at the same fe college. Way, way better than school, small class, only English, maths, two sciences and media studies to do, and everyone had their own issues. Next year, the next level of NVQ. There's so much you can do at FE college, and they are so patient. I am sure you will find a way forward for her . Hugs.

Hi Bogey
Massive congrats to your son and well done to you for being supportive of him.

MrsDV good luck to your DS for tomorrow!

Caboodle · 29/07/2013 23:12

Littleginger....a bit horrible.....not much though.... Wink

NoComet · 29/07/2013 23:18

YNBU, congratulations to Bogyfaces DS and good luck to MrsDV's.

Sometimes people are very glib about just get a job.

I've spent years watching the young man next door who have huge difficulties because he is perpetually flat broke. That means no phone credit and no reliable transport. Nearest bus is three miles away and a hefty fare into town. This makes job hunting and keeping the benefits office happy very difficult.

Being fit, healthy, but not very bright he gets various temporary seasonal labouring and gardening jobs. Great, but then he gets sacked when the ancient car/motor bike dies.

Repeat failing to get to job centre, using up phone credit explaining you can't actually fly 13 miles. Get JSA docked ensuring job hunting and getting to interviews is as hard as possible. And so it goes on.

Well done, that is great news.

. And thank him on behalf of the charities, too for all he did for them. A wonderful contribution.

SarahAndFuck · 29/07/2013 23:21

Well done to him, I'm pleased for all of you.

Could you ask him not to ring me though? Grin

cocolepew · 29/07/2013 23:24

Excellent news, well done to him!

Good luck to DeVere Jnr.

Auntfini · 29/07/2013 23:27

My sister graduated, got a job in her chosen field and was then made redundant. She was unemployed for 9 months. The amount of people who made comments as are in the op.... She finally got a job and has been in it for 2 years!

Well done your son!

MoominsYonisAreScary · 29/07/2013 23:31

Congratulations to your son!

It took ds1 8 months to find a job and he was lucky as it was what he really wanted to do but I've never seen him so miserable as he was those 8 months. It really knocked his confidence.

MammaTJ · 29/07/2013 23:34

I don't think I have ever said any of that, being of the YTS generation. I appreciate it is as hard now as then!!

Good luck!!

littleginger · 30/07/2013 00:46

I can live with being a bit horrible caboodle Grin

Remotecontrolduck · 30/07/2013 02:42

It pisses me off immensely when I see this on here. All this 'oh I worked from 13, get a job' to anyone with teen DC. Er times were different then, it is MUCH harder to get employed now! It's also a lottery on where you live. Round here it's all small market towns and villages, not too many jobs going like there is in a huge town or city.

The whole idea you are lazy for not having a job is ridiculous. Sometimes there simply isn't viable work around you can actually get to.

Well done to your DS, once he has that experience to put on his CV more doors are open to him!

poppingin1 · 30/07/2013 02:45

That is brilliant! Congrats to him. x

garlicagain · 30/07/2013 02:55

Congrats, Young Bogey Grin Making a sale during your first two hours is incredible, well done! An unexpected future in persuasion may lie ahead ... who knows?? I bet you developed that talent by trying to talk your Mum round Wink

Good to see some people have acquired a sense of reality while on Mumsnet! It can happen!

EatYourCrusts · 30/07/2013 03:18

Congrats!

sashh · 30/07/2013 06:17

Congratulations to your son OP

Good luck to MrsD's son

liquidstate · 30/07/2013 10:08

That is fantastic news! Well done to your son. I think he has a bright future ahead. Smile

I have a much younger brother so have also experienced the great job hunt first hand. He is now working as a security guard but it took a long time for him to get that. I think perhaps it is difficult nowadays to get on the career ladder. His charity shop volunteering obviously helped his social skills which is why he made a quick first sale.

GoodTouchBadTouch · 30/07/2013 10:45

Oh bless him. You must be so proud. That's a fucking Looooong time to be job searching. How bloody depressing. Makes me worry about mine when the time comes. My husband is already saying quick lets leave the country.

I did actually think JSA was quite an easy life (didn't know much about it) til I read a thread from a jobseeker the other day about what the jobcentre was making her do. I do NOT think that anymore.

Congratulation xxx
