To think that if you only have a 1 car driveway you only get to park 1 car?

There are a couple of little houses on the road that I live that have driveways just big enough for 1 car. However, at least two of them have 2 cars and park them both on their drive one in front of the other. This means that the back of the second car blocks the pavement. They are essentially acting as though the dropped kerb marks the start of their driveway.

This drives me mad as to get past you have to walk into the road. I'm going to be even less impressed about having to wheel my soon to be born baby's pram into the road to get by.

The police won't help, your best bet is the local council or parking agency. They should get parking fines for parking on the pavement!!!!!

CreatureRetorts · 29/07/2013 01:55

Email your local councillor and council. Mine (both) are quite hot on this - they sent someone down on the same day I complained (a local garage parked meaning I had to put the pushchair in the road to get past).

And I don't think this is about being judgy - it's bloody rude of the person doing it.

Our neighbour is putting up a 'No parking - towaway area' (with number of an actual towing company attatched). He's sick of cars cluttering up cul de sac. Maybe you could do the same thing ? he spoke to the towing company and they said he is in his rights and are more than happy to come a-towing !

kiwimumof2boys · 29/07/2013 02:11

'No parking' SIGN even. That makes a bit better sense !

Midnitescribbler I have a driveway as do all of the other houses on the road like I said in an earlier post. We have lots of on street parking in specially marked bays that are not used except for when people park to drop kids off at the local schools.

Our house goes: our houes, wall, grass verge, pavement. We own up to the end of the verge i.e. the verge is maintained by us etc. We park two cars on our drive, the second which sticks out to the edge of our verge.

We approached the council about putting in a dropped kerb to enable us to park two in front of our house. It was refused Angry

I'm afraid we have no option, as the house opposite - despite having a massive drive - park three of their 6 (yes SIX) vehicles on the road

YABU. All the kerbs around here are packed with cars. And all the street parking is taken. I think it's just a case where we have changed and the houses built from an older time doesn't have enough parking. Two cars are minimum, and a lot of families have 3-4 cars, depending on how many grown up children they have. I'm lucky that near me, there is only one family with adult children. Everyone else have preschool or primary aged ones.

OctopusWrangler · 29/07/2013 09:51

OneLittle it is not unreasonable to want to be able to walk on a footpath. The clue is in the name.

sparkle12mar08 · 29/07/2013 09:52

If I had the buggy with me I'd be making no effort to avoid scratching said cars at all...

doingthesplitz · 29/07/2013 09:55

YANBU. This drives me mad where I live. Cars just parked higgledy piggledy all over the pavement. There are no fences marking off the gardens so I just walk on the owners lawns rather than going out onto the road.So far no one has challenged me but if they do I know exactly what they'll be told.

Soontobemama · 29/07/2013 10:04

One little if you read my posts I've said there is plenty of available on street parking they could use. It's only in use at school run times and obviously if residents used the spaces then random cars would just have to find somewhere else to park at school drop off time.

I'm a bit surprised that a couple of people think that if you have more than one car you have the right to park it on a pavement . The houses in question are leaving no room to get by without walking into the road. Am I supposed to push my baby into the road and risk getting hit by a car just so that people don't have the inconvenience of having to park a few metres away from their front doors?

Yes I pushed the pushchair, and now the trike on the road. And also on people's lawns like doingthesplitz.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 29/07/2013 10:08

As for whether you are going to be hit by a car. That depends on how busy your road is. Plenty of cyclists cycle on the side of the road. Most residential streets aren't that busy compared to the main roads the cyclists are on.

TheFuzz · 29/07/2013 10:48

Depends upon how the road is built. On my road, 2/3rds of the driveways aren't long enough for two cars, so most of the houses have their car stuck out onto the pavement. Not a big issue as it's a cul-de-sac.

Soontobemama · 29/07/2013 13:12

Cyclists and prams are not really comparable.

This is a through road that runs from a main road and is the route to the village shops etc. so it gets a lot of cars. I just went past again and there are free parking spaces that the owners of these houses could actually still see from their kitchen windows. So really no reason for them to be using the pavement.

hi it is a police matter rather than a council matter - same as when cars park half on kerb and half on road and pedestrians have to get round them by walking in the road (happens alot round my way), however, when I spoke to local police officer who was in uniform walking past offending vehicles he acknowledged it was "a problem" but said there were other matters that were more of a priority and I was more or less told that nothing would be done. He talked about people being considerate to residents parking cars (I am a resident) on kerb as their driveways were too small but seemed blase about pedestrians, dog walkers, people with children and buggies etc having to use the road and the danger that meant for them.
Good luck - hope you have a better experience
