Sharing cost of holiday accommodation?

Trying to avoid a potential AIBU.

Sharing a villa between 3 couples + 1xDC who needs own room. Couple with DC happy to subsidise extra cost of the DC room. So far so straightforward.

Each couple want to stay a different length of time at the villa.
Couple 1 = 7 nights
Couple 2 = 10 nights
Couple 3 (with DC) = 14 nights

All are open to suggestion on how to split the total cost of the villa in the fairest way.

WWYD? Pro rata per room per night? Split total cost for 14 nights equally?

Sorry it's not a proper AIBU. (I can't even think how I would disguise it as one).

All suggestions gratefully received. Thank you.

Aaah vivi - I love your AIBUs. How was the BBQ?

What you need to do is work out a price per day per room and then just multiply it up. That is fairest

I think I would find the cost of 14 nights.

Divide that by 14 to get the cost per night

Divide that by 3, then charge each couple the relevant amount.

So if for example it worked out at £30 pn, that would be £10 per couple, so

Couple 1 = £70
Couple 2 = £100
Couple 3 =140

It wouldn't bother me about the extra room, but if bothers others then find the difference between a 3 and 4 bed villa and couple 3 pay the difference.

PS maths is not my strong point, so may be a better way to work it out.

ViviPru · 28/07/2013 16:45

Wow Gobbo but they're so yawnsomely prosaic. DP was instructed to cook his own naice burgers so was able to ensure he consumed said. I gobbled up all of the halloumi before anyone even realised it existed. Barely tasted it but I WON and that's the main thing.

So yes these suggestions seem fair, but as one half of the 7 night couple I feel it's not fair to make the other two couples subsidise a bigger villa (to accommodate us) for their longer break if that makes sense?

Mrs.P

That actually might be fairer, because then couple 3 aren't paying as much more for their 14 night break as they would if we worked it out per room....

Work out the cost per room per night. Then calculate according to nights and rooms. Then add everything up to make sure it's the villa cost just to make sure, so your not paying extra.

LIZS · 28/07/2013 16:53

cost of villa per night ie 1400/14 = 100

then divide that by no. people (including child) occupying so when all present 100/7, 5 present 100/5 and 3 present 100/3

formicadinosaur · 28/07/2013 16:55

Maybe you could pay the same as the 1o day couple? Or organise a sainsburys delivery with treats in your absence.

lastnightiwenttomanderleyagain · 28/07/2013 16:55

Oooh Vivi, was that you with the BYO BBQ?

How about you divide by the total number of nights (e.g. 7+10+14) then multiply by each couple's actual nights? Yes, the others are partly subsidising a bigger villa for you during the time you're there, but you are also subsidising their exclusive use of it at the end.

i.e., for arguments sake, say it's £3100 to make the maths easy you would pay £700 on the above basis. You could alternatively say that for one week it would be £1550 and there are three couples for this time so the cost to you would be just over £515 each. The former is therefore more in their favour but not unduly unfair to you

ViviPru · 28/07/2013 16:57

Ooh LIZS that sounds interesting... hurting my brain a bit though!

OP posts:
ViviPru · 28/07/2013 17:00

yes lastnight, that was the kind of thing I was erring toward but the maths was eluding me.... not quite following where the £700 comes from though..

OP posts:
lastnightiwenttomanderleyagain · 28/07/2013 17:05

No worries. You're all there for a total of 31 nights, therefore that's £100 per night, per couple.

You pay £700 (total cost / 31 x 7)
10 days pay £1000 (total cost/31 x 10)
14 days pay £1400 (total cost/31 x 14)

LIZS version is my comparison option - to be honest, that is arguably the 'fairest' as it takes into account how much physical space you will get to use but this version perhaps acknowledges the bigger villa issue

ventilatormum · 28/07/2013 17:08

ok let's assume it is a two week villa hire.
Divide this by two.
Couple one pay a third of a half.
Couple three pay a third of a half and two thirds of a half.
Couple two pay a third of a half and a third of a half.
How does that sound?

ENormaSnob · 28/07/2013 17:32

Could you look at grouped villas or private let apartments to make it easier?

ViviPru · 28/07/2013 18:32

Thanks all! Much appreciated.

(I promise I'll come back with a more contentious AIBU next time Smile )

OMG lastnight How spooky is this... the villa we're looking at actually costs £3100!!!! Shock

OP posts:
Trills · 28/07/2013 21:41

How about
an adult counts for 1
a child counts for 1/2

Add up the number of people-per-night, and divide that way?
