to think that this does not promote breastfeeding?

This girl DH is friends with has just posted a picture on FB of a hat she has knitted for a friend's newborn baby. Apparently the baby hat is meant to promote breastfeeding. It is a boob! Yes, a boob as a hat for a new baby. I have no issues with boobs. I am still breastfeeding my 18 months old DD but I fail to see how putting a boob hat on a baby will promote breastfeeding.

Well it's the same as people who go running "for charity", it doesn't really do anything useful to help, but they get to indulge their hobby (running, knitting) all the same.

So what? You put that ridiculous hat on you baby while breastfeeding in public? Why? Will wearing a penis hat with foreskin promote non circumcising baby boys?

I've seen these. It's just a bit of fun. I think the point of the hats is about trying to stop people seeing breasts as rude or sexual because those views can be barriers to normalising breastfeeding.

So its not so much actively promoting breastfeeding as trying to break taboos.

So as much as i am very pro-breadtfeeding there is no way I would put one of those hats on DS!

Is there also a big version of these hats that the dads have to wear to show support for their breastfeeding partners while out in public?

When you run for charity you raise money. When you knit a boob hat, you just have a boob hat.

No-one has to wear these hats OP and nor do they have to put them on their babies.

However, that doesn't mean they don't promote breast feeding.

Yes, what promotes and normalises breastfeeding in public is to go out and do it, not wearing stupid hats.

I think it's meant to be about sticking two fingers up at the "put it away" faction that believe breastfeeding should be done under a muslin etc so no one could ever - gasp! - see a glimpse of boob.

Your penis and dad hat comparisons are more ridiculous than the boob hat itself btw.

Personally I wouldn't make the connection between a boob hat and breastfeeding so imo the premise of this is kind of flawed and likely a marketing ploy alone.

It's weird. Not because it's a boob but because it's a body part. I wouldn't buy a hat designed to look like a hand or a foot or a knee, for example.

Harmless but pointless really.

Wouldn't have put it on my baby personally but I've never come across judgement for breastfeeding

I assume you'd have to make the penis hat yourself, birds.

However, I could message the boob knitter and ask if she also does knobs.

The nipple of the boob also has a piercing. I didn't think you could feed a baby while having a piercing in due to the choking risk. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

But why stick a finger up at people who are so ignorant as to judge a breastfeeding mother? Why not just be confident with your choice and pity such small minded people?

It's just supposed to be funny.

You know, when you breastfeed no one can actually see any boob because the nipple is in the baby's mouth and their head covers your boob. So put a boob hat on them and all you can see is boob. A joke.

You are really overthinking this OP Grin

It's not actually a campaign to promote breastfeeding, so a funny hat doesn't have to give a safety message in regard to piercings.
