I bought a Next light fitting online a while ago for £75. I didn't open it for ages as I was waiting for my electrician to fit me in. Anyway he came 3 weeks ago, opened the box & 2 of the glass shades were broken. Dh had thrown the invoice away Hmm but when I rang up, Next said they'd issue another invoice & I could take it back & get a replacement sent.

Just 3 days later the sale started and the light was down to £35. So I ordered another one. The electrician came, fitted the £35 one and I took the £75 with invoice back to the shop. I was annoyed they'd charged me for a £75 replacement even though they must've known it would be in the sale just days later.

Now I see they have only credited me with £35 even though the invoice stated I'd spent £75 on that particular light.

Can I ring up to rant to do I not have a leg to stand on? They've had sooooo much frickn money off me over the years this has made me mad.

Was it all ordered via an online account?

As frustrating as it is if 2 identical items are on your account one is returned I can understand why they would refund the cheaper of the two.

iloveweetos · 26/07/2013 15:28

Yes! they have to refund you how much you paid, not how much the sale was. You have the replacement invoice. Just keep at it

JemimaMuddledUp · 26/07/2013 15:31

Was the £35 light an identical replacement for the £75 one? If it was then being refunded the £35 would be right, you have still only spent the £75 that you originally ordered the light for.

(If I have understood your post correctly).

Itchyandscratchy · 26/07/2013 15:34

I paid £75, it was broken then replaced with a £75 one.
It then appeared in the sale a few days later so I ordered a sale one.
I took the £75 back but only got credited £35.
They were all the same light.

If the invoice says £75 then thats what should have been refunded to you.

ilovepowerhoop · 26/07/2013 15:35

did you take the correct invoice back to the store with you?

MrsDimples · 26/07/2013 15:36

The good was faulty so there is legislation to back it up, don't be fobbed with their policy Wink

Kat101 · 26/07/2013 15:36

You should have paid £75 in total. Sounds like this is what happened? 75 paid, 35 paid, 35 refunded?

Sirzy · 26/07/2013 15:37

So you got a replacement and then thought you would be cheeky and try to get one for half the price but you were caught out?

JemimaMuddledUp · 26/07/2013 15:39

So you spent £150 altogether, but have only been refunded £35? If that is the case then yes, you need to ring them up and rant.

ilovepowerhoop · 26/07/2013 15:40

the cheeky buggers make enough from their £3.95 catalogue prices to pay back the extra £35!

HoppinMad · 26/07/2013 15:40

I bought a similar priced winter coat from Next once, only to see it in the sale half the price less than a week later. Did piss me off, but unfortunately I didn't return it much as I wanted to, as it felt wrong to do that.

Itchyandscratchy · 26/07/2013 15:40

Do t think I was cheeky - I thought they were. As ilovepowerhoop said, the invoice said £75 but they only gave me £35 back. I made sure it was the right invoice.

Just wanted to see if there was any law about sales goods etc.

OP posts:
Aspiemum2 · 26/07/2013 15:40

Think of it the other way - if you bought it for £75 but since then the price had increased would you be happy being charged the extra?
I'm afraid I think they are right - you bought before the sale so should pay the original price

Itchyandscratchy · 26/07/2013 15:41

Meant to say Don't

OP posts:
Itsjustafleshwound · 26/07/2013 15:43

If you had the light for longer than 6 months without returning it the onus shifts and it is up to you to prove that the item was faulty when delivered.

IIRC the refund is only whatever the current price is so you can't return goods where you have paid full price to get the discount.

JemimaMuddledUp · 26/07/2013 15:43

So you did only spend £110 in total?

Now I'm really confused.

If you ended up spending any more than the initial £75 that you paid for the lamp - YANBU.

If you expected to get a replacement plus half your money back as it had gone down in price in the meantime - YABU.

Sirzy · 26/07/2013 15:43

But was it all on a next account?

If so it wouldn't take a genius to realise you were attempting to return a perfectly good light fitting because you had purchased the same one in the sale! I think doing that is cheeky.

They replaced the faulty one so that isn't that relevant really.

Itchyandscratchy · 26/07/2013 15:45

Cheers for all replies. It's a bit of a grey area then.
I'll have a ponder.
Thanks Smile

HollaAtMeBaby · 26/07/2013 15:46

YANBU. It's two separate transactions - the replacement light could have come from anywhere!

LimitedEditionLady · 26/07/2013 16:15

Im not being funny but they didnt have to recreate that invoice for you so if they hadnt what would you have got then?and the only reason theyd do that return for 35 is if you had no proof of purchase so itd be the lowest selling price returned
