To think if you are going to put an item on the store shelf then it should blooming well be for sale

4yr old Dd earns Daddy points for being exceptionally good or trying hard at something which she then exchanges for a treat. Today she took her Daddy points to Argos and after much discussion we settled on a lego set on the shelf. Took it to the counter, only to be told it isn't yet on sale but we can preorder it for a weeks time Hmm. Of course Dd couldn't understand why she couldn't have the toy when we were holding it and left the shop in tears. So what should have been a nice treat for good behaviour turned into a disappointed, confused and tearful Dd.

I was so shocked, I informed the member of staff that it was appalling. If they had no intention of selling a children's item they shouldn't put it on the shelf to tempt them. Apart from anything else, this is poor business policy, isn't it?

YABU- you could pre-order it. Have you never seen a book, dvd, cd etc which is advertised for ordering?

Plus- Argos is a catalogue shop. You don't buy 'off the shelf'.

Hegsy · 25/07/2013 19:02

Depends. Was there a lot of them? If so YANBU unreasonable andbi would complaon to HO. However if it was just one with a sign underneath saying preorder now or something similar then YABU

Sleep404 · 25/07/2013 19:05

Yes there were lots, no signs either and although it is a catalogue shop they often put children's toys out on the shelves for sale.

you can buy off the shelf if there is stuff on the shelf with an order code. Our local argos often has sale items on shelves instore for you to take to the counter so YANBU

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 25/07/2013 19:07

Was there not a sign next to it explaining that it was pre order only?
If not, then perhaps point out to them that they really ought to.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 25/07/2013 19:07

Sorry, x post

ChocHobNob · 25/07/2013 19:07

If there was no sign indicating that it could only be reserved now then YANBU.. Hopefully they will make sure it is clearer now.

Baby, every Argos I've been into has a selection of children's toys (and other items) to buy from the shelf.

BabyILoveYou · 25/07/2013 19:09

I stand corrected :) Our local one has nothing like that, just a few display items.

There definitely should have been a sign then, yes.

Sleep404 · 25/07/2013 19:10

No sign. I did point this out. The staff member I spoke to was apologetic. I'm not cross with him just the policy and the fact it spoilt what should have been a positive thing for Dd. I'm probably being a bit OTT but it irritated me.

What are daddy points.

I don't think the actual toys should be shown, but the store did apologise.

plainjaney · 25/07/2013 19:33

Argos are a bit funny like that with lego. I reserved some Lord of The Rings lego a bit ago (yes, for me ;) ) only to be told in store I couldn't have it as it wasn't actually released for another week.

some eyelash fluttering ensued and the nice man let me have my Gandalf (not a euphemism), but they are rather good at advertising lego before you can actually buy it.

StuntGirl · 25/07/2013 19:33

Their merchandising perhaps needs sorting out, but there's not really an issue with showing stock for preorder. They won't have mountains of this shit in the back, just what they've been sent to display. So YABabitU.

If you're that arsed however, an email to Argos themselves will yield more productive results than a rant on MN.

RoxyFox211 · 25/07/2013 19:42

Yanbu wtf is the point of having it out if noone can buy it Shock
obviously not the shop assistants fault so I wouldnt have a go at them, but the policy is terrible. Maybe write to management?

chickensaladagain · 25/07/2013 19:43

It's because the new catalogue isn't due out until next week so they will be reorganising their stockrooms and taking delivery of new stock in preparation, they can't physically sell it until their system updates

They've always done this but usually have some pos saying 'coming soon' or similar

mystaplerisevil · 25/07/2013 19:45

what sort of lego was it? if it was the new lone ranger lego i've seen that in other toy stores

Icelollycraving · 25/07/2013 19:48

I think you overreacted. Yabu.
