A 26 year old male colleague is leaving. I am his line manager. We have always got on well, so I thought I would get him a nice gift. Ironically being a little over spent this month I picked a bottle of whiskey out of the drinks cabinet. It has been there forever and was gifted to my non whisky drinking OH. Thought this would be worth about £30 max.

So on getting home just to check I wasn't being cheap I looked up the price. It is worth at least £85 as it's an 18 yr old single malt Glenmorangie.

I know you think why whiskey for a young lad, but he is posh Irish from Dublin. Hope I have not embarrassed him! Should I just leave it with no comment. Has anyone else done something similar with a re gifted gift?

We don't drink and also pass on alcohol given to us. Our problem is remembering to give the bottle a good dust first.

Justforlaughs · 25/07/2013 18:29

On the bright side at least your DH is a non whiskey drinker, mine would have killed me Grin

WorraLiberty · 25/07/2013 18:29

Is he a 26yr old male or a young lad? Confused

And what does being posh and Irish have to do with anything?

Either way, don't worry about it.

He might not even know it's expensive.

BabsAndTheRu · 25/07/2013 18:30

Your only problem is the rest of the staff, next time someone leaves they might be expecting a really expensive gift.

defineme · 25/07/2013 18:30

Leave it. Lucky him and it'll have given him a lovely boost to his ego to feel he was that valued-don't spoil that!

My DP did this to our DS's teacher last week!

It was a teacher that I wasn't particularly fond of, and she left the day before the last day of term. I was going out to get all the leaving gifts that night and so DP panicked as he didn't have any cash to buy her a present.

So he went home and found a bottle of perfume still in its wrapper ! Grin
He gave it to her at pickup.

Now this was Not only a rather inappropriate gift but he googled it and found it was worth £70.

She probably thinks DP fancies her. Grin

Young to me....being posh just meant appreciation of finer things in life. My family are from Norn Irn and Dubliners are kinda like Irish royalty. Although there are plenty of cultural misunderstandings. ...hope I am not adding to them.

No, I thought you were insinuating that all Dubliners are piss heads Grin

messybedhead · 25/07/2013 18:39

Oh I intend to tease him for years to come.

Luckily for him though she's left to go to another school so at least he won't have to face her.

But the other teachers the next day got a box of maltesers! I hope they weren't also expecting fancy presents. Grin

mummydarkling · 25/07/2013 18:46

No not all Dubliners are piss heads, but I do know this one likes a drink. Wink.

messy Malteasers vs posh perfume. He must have panicked!

He probably won't know the value!

nannynewo · 25/07/2013 19:15

WorraLiberty a 26 year old male is a young lad!!

This story is brilliant - it will really boost his ego so don't worry about it :)

WaitMonkey · 25/07/2013 19:42

messey was it your perfume ? I would not be best pleased with that.

Justforlaughs · 25/07/2013 20:06

waitmonkey I'd be better pleased if it was my perfume than if it was his!! Grin
