AIBU to think that when I buy ready to eat avocados they should be ready to eat?

So annoying. Bought three ready to eat avocados a week ago, they are still hard and I can't eat them yet.

So AIBU so expect to be able to eat the avocados just after I bought them?

I love unripe nectarines!

Avocados are incredibly provoking though. The memory of eating a good one once, many moons ago, leads you on to either a rock or a mouldy thing. Boo.

devilinside · 25/07/2013 13:44

Me too, and Tesco wins over Waitrose on this point. Waitrose's are always inedible

RunningBear78 · 25/07/2013 13:50

I've given up with avocados, they are so disappointing. Our local grocers does a good line in actually ripe and tasty nectarines, but still no joy on the avocado front. I've put them in the sunshine to ripen sometimes, but that seems a bit hit and miss too.

puffylovett · 25/07/2013 13:52

I never seem to have an issue with our local tesco, but I do spend time gently pressing each and every one until I find the ripest ones!

Twirlyhot · 25/07/2013 13:53

Avocados and melons are stealthy fuckers. I do not trust them.

Twostep · 25/07/2013 13:55

Stick it in the fruitbowl with a banana. Bananas release some gas to ripen them. I have tried allsorts of things to ripen them and this is the only thing that has worked for me.

I hate the ones that you think have ripened to perfection and they just turn out to be dry and tasteless.

Sadly when I want a 'cado I want it NOW! Not in 3 days, not in a week NOW NOW NOW.

Crinkle77 · 25/07/2013 14:18

I have given up buying supposed 'soft' fruits from the supermarkets. Anything like plums, peaches, nectarines never seem to come ripe and if they do they are sour and tasteless

Twostep · 25/07/2013 14:24

Apricots and plums are always a disappointment.

TheSlug · 25/07/2013 14:46

this really gets on my tits too- and I agree with Twostep, When I buy an avocado, it's because I want to eat one that day. I don't pop to the shops and think, hmm, in a few days i might fancy and avocado, let's pick one up just in case! Apart from anything else they're too expensive for that!

Nectarines are the same, but my lidl sells them when they're really ready to eat. 60p each and I always buy one as a treat when I pop in there :)

Lavidaenrosa · 26/07/2013 13:00

I understand that you all want to eat the avocado in the day you buy them, but you have to take into account this fact: avocados are probably imported, so they get here before they are ripe. I remember even in south America we had to buy them before the day we wanted to eat them (I lived in a city).

OHforDUCKScake · 26/07/2013 13:05

I shop at tesco and they are always fine.

I find the smoother skinned type (dont know the different names) are always hard. And stay hard. And taste rank.

The stouter, more ripply ones tend to be soft or soften quickly.

OHforDUCKScake · 26/07/2013 13:06

Maybe they dontnhave different names and just come from different places.

olidusUrsus · 26/07/2013 13:12

There are TWO types of avocado on general sale in Britain!? How have I missed this? I just assumed smooth skin = unripe, wrinkly = maybe ripe.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 26/07/2013 13:14

I get mine from tesco or aldis and they are ok. I tend to buy them loose though if I want to eat it that day as you can tell how ripe they are....then I buy some ready to eat ones knowing they will be ripe in a few days. As soon as they ripen put them in the fridge and it keeps them ripe but stops them going manky :)

Piddlepuddle · 26/07/2013 13:18

If from waitrose and is convenient, take back in and they will refund and replace (agree is v annoying)

TheSurgeonsMate · 26/07/2013 16:10

Ursus Yes! The wrinkled ones are called Hass and are I think more prized (ie expensive). I don't know what the smooth ones are called.

Twostep · 26/07/2013 17:58

I prefer the smooth skinned ones (I forgeyt their name - fuerentis or summit). Much nicer and you can peel them with a knife.

I'd kill for an avocado vinegarette right now.

Twostep · 26/07/2013 18:04

Did anyone see that programme on Monday (I think) about how they ripen avos? The woman was very irritating and nothing was exactly new (also educated us on the difference between a caged hen versus a free range - oooooh) but I though it was good for kids to watch. They had a bit about balsamic vinegar - I can't remember the point as I was too busy watching the man in the factory being inerviewed and thinking 'you'd never have got Bernard Matthews being interviewed in fluent italian!' The avovado woman was seriously irritating though. Maybe she is on Blue Peter? "Oooo so this is where we get avocados?! On a tree!! Squeeeeee!!! Are they ripe and yummy yet??? Gosh (gasp) no??? They meed to ripen!? Do you PICK THEM OFF THE TREEEEE? A hee a-heeee a-heee let's bat this one at the pickers head!!!".

olidusUrsus · 27/07/2013 00:50

Ugh yes. Cherry Healey, by any chance? She used to be alright but now she does my head in.

olidusUrsus · 27/07/2013 00:50

Also, thank you MN for enlightening me. I'm going to do an avocado species experiment taste test thing and possibly rope my DSS and pretend it's educational.

squoosh · 27/07/2013 02:24

Cherry Healey? I'm sure she's a nice woman, but wow is she annoying.

PseudoBadger · 27/07/2013 03:31

People take things like this back to waitrose all the time. Do it, tell them how disappointed you are....
I was standing next to a lady who took back a bag of apples and said they were unacceptable as a couple had small bruises on.

SelfconfessedSpoonyFucker · 27/07/2013 07:49

They grow lots of them where we live and we still have trouble getting a just ripe one. I buy a bag and put them in the fridge and pull out one at a time and put it for a day or so on the windowsill, then back in the fridge once soft until I'm ready to use it.

FamiliesShareGerms · 27/07/2013 07:54

YANBU

Buy normal ones a week before you need them, put on a warm window sill, hope you catch them on the day that you need to use them....

aGnotherGnu · 27/07/2013 08:12

I have given up on supermarket soft fruit and avocados for this reason. I find that both start off rock hard, then go mouldy. They go off without ever actually passin through a ripe window, and I think it's because they are picked too early.
The green grocers is actually cheaper for both, and the fruit is ripe when you buy it. Different shapes and sizes and sometimes goes overripe quite quickly, but a million times better than the hard, juiceless offering of Tesco.
