To consider arranging a viewing of the flat above mine which is up for sale?

I've had endless problems over the years with the flat above mine due to water leaks & damage caused to my bathroom, kitchen and living room. I've always suspected that some other damage was caused by leaking radiators but could never be certain as I've never had access to the flat. The main issue has been the bathroom which has leaked on average once a year over a period of nearly 17 years. Despite involving the council in getting the land lord/letting agent to repair the cause of the problem, the leaks started up again about 2 years after a new bathroom suite was fitted

It's always bugged me how it was possible for every plumber who attempted to fix the problem was as equally inept as his predessor. But, if I was to book a viewing as its now up for sale, then I might just get the answers I've been looking for. Or not. But my 'nose' is bothering me and I want to see inside the flat after all these years.

AIBU? Or would you feel/do the same?

I would book a viewing. Possibly two. With a plumber friend.

Haha just out of plain nosiness we booked to look at a flat down the road about 6 months after moving in. Our street has quite a few places up for sale usually (it's 2 bed maisonettes with gardens within definite catchment area for an outstanding primary, so people come here, have a DC, get them into school for a little while before moving further out usually). But we bought on the spur of the moment and without knowing whether our full asking price offer on the day of the viewing was a huge mistake - so wanted to see what else was on offer, and figured we were only putting the EA out rather than the owners IYSWIM.

I think your reason for doing so is far more reasonable!

Just make sure the estate agent shows you around and NOT the neighbour...

The seller has to disclose any problems with the neighbours so I would put in a formal complaint fast at this stage to get the problem sorted out once and for all.

Crikey yes, I'd be up there in a hat and glasses with a fully-briefed plumber before you could say 'detailed survey.'

I'd probably go with plumber for a quick look, depending on what he/she thought I'd then hint at major interest and go back with them for a detailed viewing - where you can be a bit more upfront about looking behind bath panels etc.

THEN I'd be contacting landlord if there were any obvious issues, and telling them that unless they were sorted before the flat was sold, I'd be putting in a formal complaint of the sort you have to disclose during sale!
