Next time she says she's bored you say:

"Really, well, in that case I have a list of jobs for you to do."

Silverfox45 · 24/07/2013 16:04

I am struggling already too with the 'I'm bored' moaning despite a day out yesterday.I have just stocked up my cupboards with lots of junk food to help me cope with the constant demands! I know that I will regret this action but I don't know how else to get through this time, so stressful.

Salmotrutta · 24/07/2013 16:05

Honestly - use my suggestion.

It works a treat.

For me and my mum before me! Grin

sunnyshine · 24/07/2013 16:06

How old is she? I've started to let my dd be much more independent at home and seems to be working. Is currently washing all my stuff for camping and previously cooked 2 lots of biscuits on her own.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 24/07/2013 16:07

Mine are too scared to say they're bored because I immediately give them a job to do. Grin

It took my eldest loading the dishwasher, unloading it twice and folding the towels and my youngest putting on a load of washing and taking a load of dry clothes upstairs for them to cotton on but I have yet to hear those dreaded words today Grin

McNewPants2013 · 24/07/2013 16:08

This is why I love working, i can escape for 8.5 hours a day for 3 days :)

Discomama · 24/07/2013 16:11

I have 8 yr old twins and DS is 2...

It's going to be a long 6 weeks...

I have a long list of jobs though and I'm working for the next 4 days out of the country! Good luck daddy Smile

Glad it's not just my two who are bored bored bored!

All I want is one day at home to get organised and packed for our holiday but that makes me the worst mum in the world apparently!

They also just want to eat constantly too.

Discomama · 24/07/2013 16:25

Forgot about the constant demands for food too, thought they had worms!!

The words "im bored" were banned in my house as a kid, as my mum would just respond with "right i'll find you a job then" we cottoned on to this pretty quick and never said we were bored any more! :) my dad also always said "only boring people get bored". I agree with this mostly, there is always something to do!

Mum had a genius idea when my brother and I started on the 'I'm booooooored' crap in the hols.

She took us to a craft shop to choose a stackload of balsa wood, a craft knife and some UHU glue - and told us to get on with it. My brother made a replica X-Wing fighter from Star Wars, and I made fences, barns, buildings, etc for a miniature farm I could spread out on the carpet with.

Kept us busy for days - and because our hands were covered with glue we didn't want to constantly be snacking with them.

Otherwise there's nothing for it than sacrificing a tree in the back garden and letting them build a tree house, I am afraid.

Undertone · 24/07/2013 16:49

Oo! Just remembered other stuff too:

  • Making a go-kart (including finding pram wheels)
  • Improvising a water slide thing with tarpaulin from garden centre and the hose
stillstanding29 · 24/07/2013 16:58

Sometimes I think it takes them a while to wind down in the holidays and then they chill out and get into the slower pace. That's what I'm telling myself anyway.

oscarwilde · 24/07/2013 16:59

Sit down tonight and write the biggest, most anally retentive list of jobs that need doing that you can imagine. Then stick it to the fridge and tell them that you want to get through them all in the next six weeks. Watch them make plans to get out of the house very sharply Grin It was a favourite of my fathers except he actually expected us to do it

For example:
Move fridge, clean behind it
Empty and clean fridge
Wash skirting boards
Weed cobbled driveway
Scrub kitchen floor where floor meets kickboards with toothbrush [I kid you not]
Sort lego into same colours/sizes - build models
Check all jigsaws and games to make sure no missing pieces
Empty random drawer of crap in the kitchen
Cover school books [don't think this applies in the UK]

IndridCold · 24/07/2013 17:04

I'm with Salmotrutta here. The reply to 'I'm bored' in our house is 'Oh good, you can come and help me with (insert name of tedious chore here).

badbelinda · 24/07/2013 17:08

I'm a guilt trip P/T working Mum and on the days I'm off with the kids tend to over-compensate by taking them on all sorts of trips and micro-managing their time. DH has pointed out that this is OTT and if he ever has a day off with them leaves them much more to their own devices while he gets on with stuff he wants to do. They usually come up with something really inventive to do, costing nothing, using imagination etc and end up a lot less fraught at the end of the day. One day I'll learn....

VerySmallSqueak · 24/07/2013 17:09

Mine are so busy being not bored that the house is trashed with big mud skids on the carpet and 'potions' all over the garden. All the tubs have been moved looking for bugs, and I can barely open their bedroom door.

I would like them to just flop in front of the tv for a bit and announce that they're bored.....
