To think this man making stupid remarks about double buggys was BU?

I work in a major city and take the same commuter bus each morning, meaning that most of us bus riders have got to know each other quite well. There's a man that takes the bus with me who is for the most part a really nice guy, but he is a bit of a right wing Daily Fail type at times. He's married with no kids.
We're stopped in traffic on a main street and we are all looking out of the window and see a young mum or nanny pushing a double buggy with two kids in it. No drama, no one's falling over the buggy or being pushed out the way. No issues- just lady pushing buggy and getting on with it. This bloke on my bus- let's call him Bob- starts yelling out the open window that double buggys should be banned by law. He then elabarates that it's because they block the whole pavement. He starts to go on and on about when he was a kid how the double buggys weren't side to side but with the kids sitting in front of each other. In his excited state he yells that the extended front style buggys were most likely banned for psycological reasons (!) because of someone complaining about equality or low self esteem. He then yelled out "What's wrong with mums today, why can't they do their jobs?"
Obviousley WTF, but also:

  1. When I was a nanny I used the side-to-side type double buggys. They are much lighter, cheaper, easier to push and easier to collapse and take on the tube/bus/taxi/car/up a flight of stairs. The extended front ones are more suitable for a baby and toddler, and the side-to-side ones for bigger kids closer in age.
  2. Either one takes up some space on the pavement.
  3. It's the parent's or caregiver's choice what to use- not some random bus rider's.
  4. If somebody is taking up more pavement space because of a pram or buggy, wheelchair, guide dog, holding hands with a toddler, supporting an elderly person, on crutches etc. surely it's MY responsibility as an abled bodied and considerate person to slow down or walk around them?

He sounds a bit nuts Shock

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 24/07/2013 15:53

He yelled out the window at her?

What a horrible thing to do.

Morgause · 24/07/2013 15:58

He sounds a bit weird but he has a point about those buggies that fill the pavement. Maybe he's been forced to walk into the road once too often.

Salmotrutta · 24/07/2013 16:01

What peculiar behaviour! Confused

YoniBottsBumgina · 24/07/2013 16:18

Sounds like he had some problems of his own.

TylerHopkins · 24/07/2013 16:24

Karma will take care of him. He's due for an ankle ramming any day now Grin

samandi · 24/07/2013 16:24

He sounds seriously unhinged. Obviously, YANBU. (Although uou are possibly a bit U to refer to him as otherwise a really nice guy - I don't know.)

FeckOffCup · 24/07/2013 16:37

Let's hope he gets blessed with a multiple birth at some point and then see how quick he backtracks on his opinion of double buggies. Oh and he is wrong by the way, my twin cousins had a side by side double buggy and we are all in our 30s now so they are not a recent thing at all.

ThePowerof3 · 24/07/2013 16:40

I used to have a double buggy because I couldn't drive and would walk for hours with it, I never forced anyone to walk in the road. Had to walk in the road a lot myself due to cars up on the pavement though

Phineyj · 24/07/2013 16:42

Would he really rather this stranger was cluttering up the road in an enormous car instead?! YANBU. What a weirdo.

HoneyStepMummy · 24/07/2013 16:58

Yes Phineyj this same man complains about all the cars cluttering the roads so you should think he would be happy! This bloke obviously knows nothing about small kids and unless someone rams him with a buggy (single or double) why on earth does he care?
The reason I said he's mostly a really nice guy is because he does a ton of charity and volunteer work, including donating care packages to unwed young mums in a home/shelter. That's why it seems so odd and quite nasty to start yelling at someone just because he doesn't like their choice of buggy.
It's difficult enough as it is getting around with several small kids without someone yelling their stupid opinions at you.

My cousin has a triple buggy for her triplets. He would probably explode with rage seeing her pushing it Grin

Rufus43 · 24/07/2013 17:15

Ooh daddypigsmistress my friend had a quadruple buggy! Seriously! I had both types of buggy with my last two. Quite what people expect you to do when you have two children close in age I don't know!

Both buggies had their faults, trying to get through doors with the tandem one was a nightmare, much prefer ramming the door with the double!

merrymouse · 24/07/2013 17:23

? I remember being pushed in a side by side double buggy in the seventies.

However, in this case I think he sounds more very odd than unreasonable. (Clearly he is unreasonable though).

Rufus43 · 24/07/2013 17:25

When I said tandem I meant the ones with one seat in from of the other, not one underneath, I don't like those....I would smother the baby under shopping
