Seat reservations on train

ProudAS · 24/07/2013 10:14

More a wwyd

I am on a train and some passengers (myself included) reserved seats in advance but the reservation tickets haven't been put in place.

Most people have been good natured about it and found seats near their travelling companions. I am now in "my seat" as the gentleman who was there has got off the train so hopefully I won't be told off for being in someone else's!

Problem is the train is now filling up, a few passengers are standing and there will no doubt be more after the next station. Would it be unreasonable to expect passengers who have not reserved to give up seats to those who have?

As for why the reservations weren't put on in the first place there may have been a good reason and I'm not in a position to hazard a guess.

I would suppose this all comes down to 'proving' who has reserved a particular seat. Does it say on your ticket if you have?

FudgeyCookie · 24/07/2013 10:17

If the reservations haven't been out out, it's a free for all as far as I'm aware. Both dp and sil work for (different) train companies, and sil's does seat reservations, but if they aren't out its a free for all.

Faithless12 · 24/07/2013 10:17

If the reservation tickets are not there then I would not expect them to stand. However, I would complain to the train company.

angelos02 · 24/07/2013 10:18

It would be the right thing to give up a seat to the person that had reserved it. But I also feel for the people that don't have reservations as they weren't to know.

OfficerMeow · 24/07/2013 10:18

If I've reserved seats I'll ask someone to move out of my seat, with my ticket as proof.

FudgeyCookie · 24/07/2013 10:18

*put out not out out.

CleverClod · 24/07/2013 10:18

If you reserved seats you would have tickets which would tell you your seat number. You should give up the seat if someone has evidence of their seat number, whether or not the train guard put the reservation ticket on the seat.

If in doubt speak to the train guard/ticket collector.

ICBINEG · 24/07/2013 10:19

if they haven't put them out then the reservations are void.

complain to the train company.

NotYoMomma · 24/07/2013 10:19

well you are in your seat so I wouldnt do anything lol

if I hadnt reserved a seat but had sat in a seat that looked unreserved - howwould I even know that it HADactually been reserved to offer it?

if someone came and asked for theseat because they had reserved it I would probably move but I can see why people would be pissed if they had got settled

but in all honesty? I'd sit there for as long as I could lol - pregnant and elderly excepted of course

ICBINEG · 24/07/2013 10:20

The guard should be announcing at each station that the reservations are void to remove confusion.

ProudAS · 24/07/2013 10:20

I do have a reservation ticket. I didn't ask the person in mine to move as the next seat was just as good but if I'd been asked to move for someone else I would have expected him to move for me.

ICBING Why are the reservations void? If people have their seat reservation ticket as proof, that would be valid.

MidniteScribbler · 24/07/2013 10:24

Do you pay extra for reserved seats? If so, how can they just decide that they are void? Do they then refund if you can't get a seat?

celestialsquirrels · 24/07/2013 10:25

I wouldn't move if I had sat down in a seat which had no evidence of being reserved. Why should I be turfed out and have to stand for someone who pitches up later? Sorry but no. If the seats were marked as reserved I would have sat in an unmarked one but if they aren't marked I'm not playing roulette thanks.

Anyway the reason the person has a reserved seat is because they are an infrequent/cheap day traveller. Me with my incredibly expensive annual season ticket doesn't have the option of reserving and I'm afraid I am a more valuable customer than you are Grin

FudgeyCookie · 24/07/2013 10:27

Seat reservations are free. If they've used a different train set to what they were going to it can be void. I've just asked sil and she confirmed I was right - it's a free for all - whether you have evidence of a reservation or not. They do not count.

There's various reasons for them being void - train fault developed, delay, different set, no staff member to out them out where the train started etc

FudgeyCookie · 24/07/2013 10:28

celestial which company do you travel with? First great western for example do lock seat bookings for season tickets

PeterParkerSays · 24/07/2013 10:28

I've had this before, the reservations don't count if the cards aren't there, as often the carriages etc don't match up with the reservation cards. The staff also won't get involved if someone is sitting in your reserved seat and refuses to move.

Sorry. Be glad you got your seat without any issue.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/07/2013 10:28

Of course the reservations are not void. The ticket proves the reservation. I'd be sorry for you, but I'd expect you to move if you were in 'my' seat according to my ticket reservation.

FudgeyCookie · 24/07/2013 10:28

Block! Ffs not lock

MidniteScribbler · 24/07/2013 10:29

Thanks FudgeyCookie. I'm not from the UK so wasn't sure if you had to pay extra or not. Something else to remember for my next trip over there.

LRDYaDumayuIThink · 24/07/2013 10:37
Confused

I have never known them to say the reservations are void if the cards aren't out. Often they announce that there are no reservations on this train, which is different. But loads of them don't even use those card ticket things any more - and the ticket collector still asks to check the reservation when checking the ticket. Why would they do that if the reservation was void?

I think given you've got your own seat you should just let it go, though. If people are standing because someone won't get out of a reserved seat, that's a pain in the arse for them but not your problem. If people are standing because they expect someone sitting to magically know they're in a reserved seat without being told, they're being twits. I never understand why people do this.

StealthPolarBear · 24/07/2013 10:40

It may vary. On east coast as far as I am aware your ticket is proof of reservation even if the seat ticket isnt on

StealthPolarBear · 24/07/2013 10:41

Lrd they ask that I think because the tickets are sold as "booked train only" and the seat reservatio shows the time of the train you should be on.
I hate the new system, so much more complicated

TreeMonkey · 24/07/2013 10:44

What can be annoying is when you book tickets in advance and the ticket is only valid on that certain service with the seat reservation.

If this is the case on this service/ticket, technically, if you're having to stand then your ticket would therefore be invalid...(I would think).

IShallWearMidnight · 24/07/2013 10:45

we once had seat reservations for a carriage which didn't exists when we got there. So they put us in first class which was lovely Grin.

But the last time I travelled with a seat reservation, they anounced that they weren't valid, so you could sit where you liked. Cue loads of passengers stropping because they hadn't listened to the announcements.
