Sandpit in baby room in nursery?

I am back to work soon after nine months off and my DS will spend a couple of days a week in nursery. Other family and friends have used the nursery and it really is a great place.

I had my first official visit with DS last week for a chat and he's in tomorrow for a few hours on his own so not sure whether to mention this. my sister says i should and my dp says not to as sand gets everywhere but i think they should do a better job at cleaning it up! I'm sure you will tell me if I am being over the top!

There is a sandpit in the baby room (which is joined by gate to next age room for babies when reach walking age). Now obviously sand gets everywhere and didn't think about the issue until I was sat on the floor during our chat, not near the sandpit, but there was sand on my hands and of course on DS hands and therefore around his mouth.

So really just want opinions on what you think about a. Sand in baby room where at that age they are just going to stick it in their mouth and b. the fact that it was all over the floor at the other end of the room.

I am quite happy with all other aspects of the nursery and wonder if this is me just being PFB! Smile

YABU, it's sand. Just sand. It's great that they can play in it.

PoppyWearer · 22/07/2013 22:24

Bit PFB, sorry.

Sand gets everywhere, but a good nursery will have the children getting messy to explore different textures, etc.

Shaving foam and flour are also commonly used, IME.

They will clean up at the end of the day, but probably before that. The reality is that with toddlers, attempts to clean up are often futile!

It's a bit of a bonkers decision but not the end of the world.

I assume you won't be taking your DC to a beach when they are young then?

You really need to unclench. It's just sand.

PoppyWearer · 22/07/2013 22:26

I speak as someone whose DC went face-first into a beach aged about 8mo and needed first aid to wash the sand out of his eyes...

Finola1step · 22/07/2013 22:27

Is it possible that the sand might not be a permenant fixture? They could be learning about the seaside this month and gave brought some sand in from outside.

Most nurseries will have sand in and outside at some points if not all of the time. Great stuff for fine motor development, creativity etc etc.

It's just sand.

My DS comes home covered in sand, flour and foam.

YABU. What do you think happens to second borns when their older sibling is taken the beach.

Babies love sand

maja00 · 22/07/2013 22:30

DS's baby room had a sand "corner", not even in a box/pit!

ChunkyPickle · 22/07/2013 22:32

Sand won't be the problem, it's the glitter.... now that really does get everywhere.

Itsmymove · 22/07/2013 22:34

Ok, fair enough. I have been to the beach with him a few times in this cracking weather so him getting dirty isn't the issue at all. Just thought for the smaller babies it wasn't ideal. I will not be voicing my concern tomorrow then so they won't be thinking 'here's that nutter who was worried about the sand' Grin

YABU. DD started nursery and there was often a sand pit in the corner. She loves it! She did eat some and the sandy/gritty nappies freaked me out a bit, but no harm done.

Xmasbaby11 · 22/07/2013 22:34

It's the flour ... wait for the flour!

Parietal · 22/07/2013 22:35

sand is fine. babies learn very quickly that it isn't tasty, and then don't put their hands in their mouths when they've been crawling around.

CloudsAndTrees · 22/07/2013 22:35

The sand is a nice thing, but if they're going to have it inside, then they should be clearing up better after its used.

It won't do any harm though, and if that's the only negative thing you can find about the nursery then you are probably onto a good thing.

Fishandjam · 22/07/2013 22:38

My DD (13 months) adores the sandpit at her nursery, and has done so ever since she started there at 9 months. She comes home caked in it, and 24 hours later does sandy turds Grin

It's just sand. Nice, clean, washed, sterilized, soft play sand. It's not like it's builder's aggregate.

Heavens, not either of my two. Great big handfuls of sand in the mouth every chance they got. Loved it! Swallowed as well - comes out the other end and leads to very sore bottoms. they both grew out of it around 10 months iirc
