On the 3 for £10 range. All the sizes have reduced. I used to be able to feed 4 of us, and the mince stretched to two meals bulked out. Do they think we are stupid? I would rather they were honest and raised the price. It's time to vote with my feet!

We had a bad experience with tesco chicken (off before the date, stunk to high heaven), so we now do a farm shop trip once a month, get a 'payday tray', which is £70 but has enough for the full month, sausages/chops/mince/chicken/ribs/steak etc. it seems a lot of money at the time but it lasts us the full month pretty much. We just freeze the lot, and its so much nicer quality. Though i appreciate not everyone is close to a farm.

I have switched to Morrisons for my main shop as they also do the 3 for 10 offer and I read something earlier in the year that said they are the best of the big supermarkets in knowing about the origin of their meat and being involved all along the chain. Tbh after Horsegate I am only comfortable buying meat from there and M&S. Morrisons also have very good offers on fresh fruit at the moment. I do also go to Asda (veruy competitive chocolate pricing Grin) but don't buy meat there. Have regularly ordered online from Tesco for a few years but haven't put an order in for a month now and I am coping!

The meat at Tesco is terrible quality; I always do my online shopping at Sainsburys but was recently pleasantly surprised with the butchers' meat at Morrisons.

Their fish counter is also amazing and routinely has lovely squid, octopus, monkfish and swordfish (unlike stupid Tesco and their pitiful 3 fillets of haddock and salmon).

ha! Go in at 7pm.

Last Thurs I got two massive joints of pork for around £1.80 each, saving £30. Three packs of chicken which were 44p each so by the time they knocked off the discount for 3 for £10, worked out to be something like -68p, and a pack of mince for 19p. I chopped one of the porks into two family sized portions and froze that, and froze the other as a large joint for over xmas.

I get fruit and bread like that too, I have a massive freezer and just judge for myself whether the stuff is still fresh or not. I've got a bag of salad on the go now, 3 days past the date and still good. Other times you see bags of slime on sale just because it is still in date! Blueberries and things I freeze - I got 6 tubs a few weeks ago for £1.22 and put them in pancakes at the weekends!

sonlypuppyfat - don't be rude about being veggie - there is no need for an 'ugh' at all.

Our tesco has brought in an outside butcher who's quality is much better than their prepacked. He has much better offers like 4 pork chops, 4 chicken breasts, 8 sausages, 4 burgers and a bag of lean mince. It's £9.99 and does 5 dinners.

One answer: go to Aldi

Meglet · 22/07/2013 17:21

Don't eat meat so often. I buy organic a couple of times a month.

JRmumma · 22/07/2013 17:22

Anyone buy meat from costo? Am trying to work out whether its worth the yearly fee for bulk buying, especially meat.

Sorry to hijack!

Chopstheduck · 22/07/2013 17:31

costco meat isn't cheap but it is very good quality. I do like their meat, but on a buget atm, and can't afford it!

chanie44 · 22/07/2013 17:32

I sometimes get meat from Costco. I portion it up and freeze.

Chicken thighs are £6 for about 15 and chicken drumsticks are £5 for the 15. They don't shrink either.

ThistleDown · 22/07/2013 17:37

Tesco meat is getting ridiculously expensive. We only have a Tesco Metro and similar sized Co-Op. I'm going to try the butcher and see how their prices compare.

dingit · 22/07/2013 17:46

I NEED AN ALDI!

Just got back from the local Tesco Metro, where I popped in for a panini. I counted eight flies crawling all over the baked goods. The stacking staff were utterly unconcerned.

I will not darken their doors again... and we'd normally spend easily 60-70 pounds there a week.

dingit · 22/07/2013 18:01

Nice! I have to admit though, I was struggling with flies in my kitchen yesterday.
