to think it's disgusting to let your cat sit on the kitchen counter

Following the dog licking plates thread, where I found it really interesting how it seemed to be equally divided between strong agreement and disagreement, I'm interested to know what people think of cats walking on kitchen counters. I think it's even more disgusting, even though we love our cat, but we have friend whose cat sits on the breadboard, yuck.

It's revolting. I've not caught AwkwardCat on the work surface - yet. She is allowed on the one that we don't use to prepare food, on the other side of the kitchen, and the kitchen door is closed when we are out of the house.

Binkyridesagain · 21/07/2013 10:06

My kitchen counters were installed purely for the cats, they let me use them on occasion to cook meals but only if I feed them in return.

AlwaysWashing · 21/07/2013 10:09

YANBU
I have a friend with a herd I'd manky cats that sit on the surfaces, on the cooker & in the sink.
YUCK

AlwaysWashing · 21/07/2013 10:09

Of not I'd

MrsKeithRichards · 21/07/2013 10:10

Its beyond grim really. I've had cats all my life and they've never done this

Cat98 · 21/07/2013 10:11

My kitchen has Counters all the way round. My cat sits on one side (that we don't use other than temporarily dumping stuff there that needs to be taken upstairs Grin ) but I have never seen her go onto the other areas.. Doesn't mean she never has I know, but we clean before preparing food on them so I'm not going to stress about it! If I ever see her jumping up there she will be summarily removed however!

RandomMess · 21/07/2013 10:11

Problem with kitchen counters is they are perfect cat height for nuzzling up to your owners face for maximum attention - grrr

Sparklingbrook · 21/07/2013 10:11

My cat has never done it and I wouldn't let her anyway.

Cat98 · 21/07/2013 10:12

But yes, I'm not sure about the word 'let' really - how can you stop them, other than shutting them out of the kitchen?! Cats do whatever the hell they want when you're not looking, you know ..

pigletmania · 21/07/2013 10:13

Errrr horrible baby that is just foul

treacleturkey · 21/07/2013 10:14

My cats both have awful fleas at the mo, they are being treated by the vet and house due to be fumigated this week. BUT they walk all over the worktops, flicking their fleas, flea poo (black specks) and eggs all over where we prepare our food. It's SO gross.

But how do i stop them? As soon as i leave the house (ie every day to go to work) they walk all over the worktops again and spread their fleas.

carlajean · 21/07/2013 10:14

kitten soft why come on the thread then? Why not fuck off and start a thread on start what you consider to be appropriate for the forum.

You can shut the doors of rooms you don't want them in! My friend has cats and Noway would she have them on the counter and in the kitchen, if they go there when she's in te kitchen she removes them. If tey go on the counters, you remove them

pigletmania · 21/07/2013 10:18

Shut the doors!

carlajean · 21/07/2013 10:18

I know what you all mean about cats being a law unto themselves, but it's the people who allow their cats on there, and find it normal, that I find odd.

Or relocate the cat flap

Binkyridesagain · 21/07/2013 10:19

I am odd. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 21/07/2013 10:20

Sparkling Cat doesn't go in the kitchen. The door stays shut and she isn't fed in there. So don't really have to not 'let' her IYKWIM.

usualsuspect · 21/07/2013 10:21

Bit harsh Carlajean.

People can post what the fuck they like on your thread.

Sorry about that.

ZolaBuddleia · 21/07/2013 10:21

Surely something could be fashioned by way of an electrical charge or small explosive device.

cardamomginger · 21/07/2013 10:21

Disgusting. I had two cats and they knew that ON PAIN OF DEATH they were not allowed on the kitchen counters. I had about 5 instances of kitchen counter walking between them.

DSIL on the other hand has a houseful of cats and they are allowed to walk and stick their heads (and bums) into whatever they want. It's vile.

Pigsmummy · 21/07/2013 10:22

My cat has started entering and exiting the house via the kitchen window so walks on the work top so I wipe it, along with all kitchen surfaces with a disinfectant before preparing food there so I genuinely don't understand the outrage. I don't leave food or plates out, why would you. YABU

I asked the cat for a comment, he considered things carefully before licking his arse, jumping up on the kitchen work top and exiting via the window. Helpful?
