Quick Driving Q

I've just come back from holiday with my Mum in France, it was brilliant. I've driven approx 900km over the last week (well done me right sided driving, all good).

My Dad picked us up from the airport in my car, left in the UK. The passenger wing mirror has had a serious collision and is smashed. My question is:

My father said it was like that when he got to my car. My driveway is not a thoroughfare and you'd have to make an effort. Like, car is parked nose to bay window and no access. To be fair you'd get scratches if you wanted to harm it where it lives.

I believe my Dad hit something while driving my car, but he seems to think it was done stationary. I don't think he is lying deliberately.

Now I have a couple of worries:
There is a car that has had a wing mirror hit and nobody has claimed it. If this is the case, is there anything I can do?
Am I breaking the law not reporting a suspected bump when I was not driving my car?

Thanks, not quite sure where to go with this.

On a wilder note, please please any suggestions as to how to deal with parents driving who should be encouraged not to do so would be gratefully received.

Is your father insured on your car?

AbbyGally · 20/07/2013 22:49

Yep. Unless he's fibbed to me, which I don't believe. I did consider but discounted that he was disseminating for insurance...

Don't worry about it. Part of normal driving/life in my town. Suspected bumps do not have to be reported.

Re parents. I feel your pain. Dad has gone from competent, accomplished driver to doddery old git. Given the chance, in any car, I drive.

Thx by the way Pseudo for reading!

Don't know about the wing mirror bit, but my mum has got rather too erratic driving so I told her a white lie that my insurance company wouldn't cover her over the age of 75 on my car, because it was a special discounted policy and she is too much of a liability Maybe you could use that tactic with your dad (change ages to suit) if youre worried about him driving?

My dad stopped driving. Couple of years ago, he just decided not to renew his licence (he's over 80). Mum only does local journeys now, she has never driven fast and is now hesitant to the extent that it could be dangerous. I do worry about her driving with DC in the car, but they don't go far.

I also offer o drive if going a distance, but will grab a lift to the station.
