To have said this...in the spirit of the dog themed threads

I was walking my dog earlier this evening. She was off lead, there were no other people around except one man and his also off lead dog about. He was about 100 yards ahead paying no attention whatsoever to his dog. Mine went over to say hello. She's a teeny, well socialised dog. This one was a collie cross,so mid size. Owner turned around just as they were doing the dog greeting they all do. He starts shouting "no no no" flapping his arms and running back towards us (me,my dog,his dog). He shoved my dog away and put his back on the lead, then snapped "WHAT IF HE WAS NASTY?!", to which I replied "well you should pay attention to your animal and have him on his bloody lead".

AiBU to have said this and to think that if you 1) have your dog off lead you should paying 100% attention 2) if you have your dog off lead it is fair for others to assume it doesn't rabidly hate other dogs? (his wasn't, he was totally fine)

I am not a dog owner and have never had a dog, but this does not seem unreasonable to me.

emdottyjackson · 21/07/2013 07:10

YANBU my dog does not like other dogs, I keep him on a lead close to me, we are having him trained but its a slow process, he's a rescue & wears a yellow dog bandana, my annoyance is when despite this other people allow their dogs to run up to him & tell me their dogs are fine, then get upset when mine snaps at them. I would never allow him off lead for this reason.

Enfyshedd · 21/07/2013 08:14

YANBU - If you believe your dog is "nasty", they you shouldn't have it let it off the lead. You certainly shouldn't allow it to be out of your sight if you have any concerns about "nasty" dogs.

This dog walking malarkey seems to be a minefield of other dogs/children/picnics etc. I didn't realise it was such a fiasco.

YANBU though.

YANBU. Dog on lead means recall your loose dog and keep him to your side while you pass each other. Dog off lead means good to socialise with other dogs.

Turnipinatutu · 21/07/2013 08:32

Sounds like he's a bit odd to me.
If I'm out walking and see another dog walker approaching, I do as they do. If they are relaxed and happy for the dogs to greet/play, then I am too. If they call their dog back to them, then I do the same.
Common sense really.
He should have been more with it.

CockyFox · 21/07/2013 08:39

YANBU but letting dogs off lead and not paying attention is not as bad as what my PILs do.

My in-laws send their dog to the park on its
own. They back on to it so just open the gate and let it go. We only found out because we walked that way to visit them and saw the dog, DH held her collar and walked her home then shouted at his parents for their irresponsibility - they still do it though.

Their dog is fine around other dogs and children but I still don't think it should go out alone.

Yanbu, owner paying no attention to a loose dog who is merrily gambolling along tells me dog is unflappable.

Dog on lead (in an area where its ok to be iff lead ) tells me to keep my dog away and out him back on his lead
