To think it's disgusting to let your dog lick humans' plates

Scrape the food into the dog's bowl. PLEASE.

I don't care how good the dishwasher is, or how hot the water is, I think it's utterly minging to give a dog the plates to lick. Aibu?

Yes. Well I wouldn't like it anyway.

Friend of mine had two dogs. They'd offer you tea or coffee, and after you'd finished they'd gesture for you to place your cup on the floor for one of the dogs to finish the dregs, which they willingly did! No dishwasher either, so I do hope they washed them properly.

atrcts · 20/07/2013 17:56

There must be something wrong with my dishwasher - sometimes it completes a cycle perfectly clean and sparkling, but other times it requires a second clean Shock

The advice everywhere is to NOT try and use a dishwasher to sterilise baby bottles, so that kind of tells you something about trying to say a dishwasher sterilises everything in it, doesn't it?

I love dogs but it seems wrong to allow then to lick plates, I don't like it.

spidercatcherextraordinaire · 20/07/2013 18:10

Yuk!!!

A friend does this with her Dobermans. Makes me want to hurl.

Ericaequites · 20/07/2013 18:10

If the plates are washed well between uses, I fail to see the problem. Presumably, you eat in restaurants where you have no idea how dishes are washed and anyone could have eaten before you.

Trills · 20/07/2013 18:11

If you wash it afterwards nothing bad will be on it.

Don't be so squeamish.

It might be bad manners but it's not actually unhygienic.

carlajean · 20/07/2013 18:11

Each to her own, but I think it's disgusting, even though I love my dog.

macreturnofthe · 20/07/2013 18:12

totally agree - wouldn't want to risk poisoning the dog with human germs!!!
Grin

ElizabethHornswoggle · 20/07/2013 18:14

YADNBU. Absolutely disgusting. Ugh.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 20/07/2013 18:14

I think it's disgusting - dishwasher or not.

Dogs should eat from their own bowls and should not be fed food from bowls on the table for Sunday lunch before the family have eaten and finished

LtEveDallas · 20/07/2013 18:20

I wonder if this will work Sharing

We don't care about dog germs in this house...

OwlinaTree · 20/07/2013 19:34

Friend of mine once went to a pub to eat. Staff in pub put leftover plates on the floor for the pub dogs to finishofoff!

That's Shock to me!

attheendoftheday · 20/07/2013 20:08

How about you do what you like in your house and I will in mine? The plates get washed afterwards, but tbh I don't mind a bit of dog saliva. I let the dog lick my face too! Haven't died yet.

YABU.

RunRabbit · 20/07/2013 20:12

YADNBU!

It's vile.
I wouldn't eat at the persons house if I knew they did this.

  1. Not everyone has a dishwasher

  2. I don't want to eat off something that has previously been licked by something that licks its own arsehole - Dishwashed or not.

BlueSkySunnyDay · 20/07/2013 20:15

It does seem to be dog haters united on here at the moment - eww loads of cat lovers (shudder)

Still much as l I love my dog to bits but I don't want her tongue anywhere near my plates or me.

She is not "kissing" me she is running her scurfy tongue she has just eaten poo and licked her butt with (shudders again) she has also had to be distracted on our walk twice this week from eating another dogs grass sick.

Our dishwasher is a bit temperamental I wouldn't trust it to sterilise anything...but even if I did I would know her germy tongue had been there - yuk

waikikamookau · 20/07/2013 20:17

I don't do it, but my pup is learning about the wonders of the dishwasher, slowly though.

Wiifitmama · 20/07/2013 20:19

My friend's dog climbs into the dishwasher at their house and prewashes all the plates. I need thought much about it. I am usually very squeamish about dirt, germs and animal stuff. But honestly, even now, thinking about it it doesn't bother me. I think the dishwasher cleans them well enough after. I also let the dog have water of of oe of my regular bowls when it visits. Again, I didn't give a thought to it until now. My dishwasher is good and I am sure it cleans well enough.

myfirstkitchen · 20/07/2013 20:25

Disgusting.
I don't care how well the plates are washed.
It's also disgusting when people put fag ash on their leftovers on the plate (my friend does this to stop picking at leftovers). She also sticks chewed up gum, big wads of boogeys and scabs on half a plate of chips if any available.

lougle · 20/07/2013 20:27

I didn't go as far as sharing my icecream, but I did buy one for the dog when I bought some for the rest of the family. He turned his nose up at it Shock

I think the weather is messing with his appetite.

MacaYoniandCheese · 20/07/2013 20:28

This will horrify some of you...Grin

Last week I was running with my dog and it was very hot so I took one of those dog water bottles (the kind with the special attachment for them to drink out of). After she had her drink, I took the lid off and had one too. Amazingly I did not get sick OR die .

WitchOfEndor · 20/07/2013 20:34

I have a dog and don't let him lick our plates because it takes 2 kettles worth of boiling water to remove the almost impenetrable layer of saliva which laminates itself to his bowl.. I love him dearly but I don't want his saliva anywhere near my plates!

Youcanringmybell · 20/07/2013 20:43

Gobblersknob - a person after my own heart Grin
Ratties love nothing better than to share a spot of fine dining with us. I was going to post about my rats licking the plates but was too scared.
Thanks

GemmaTeller · 20/07/2013 20:47

Whilst we don't give our dogs the plates or cups, our male boxer likes nothing better than getting the burnt on bits off a roasting tin or baking tin.

I look on it as doing me a favour.

froubylou · 20/07/2013 20:48

Dog spit ain't that bad you know.

If they have a wound they lick it to keep it clean and sterile.

I'd rather share my plate with my dog and then wash it than relive my early 20's when I think about some of theddodgy blokes I may have perhaps kissed!

froubylou · 20/07/2013 20:50

And to horrify you all even further my dp shares a can of fanta with dds pony at shows occasionally.

BlueSkySunnyDay · 20/07/2013 20:53

myfirstkitchen - my friend used to blow her nose on the paper serviette in restaurants then put it on the plate Wink I always thought that was a bit skanky
