School sending email that is unrelated to school business

This has been bugging me for a little while, but thought I would check that I was NBU before moaning at the school.

DC?s school use ParentMail to send out communications via email. So generally it?s things like parents? evenings, school disco, not to park in front of local residents? drives etc. All perfectly acceptable.

However there seems to be a recent trend to use the service to send out emails for things that can only considered to be anything to do with the school in a very nebulous fashion.

The latest is a circular advising us where and when the local Slimming club meets ? yes, on one day they do meet in the school, but this feels very much like use of my personal details to spam me.

AIBU to think that school mail should be restricted to things that are directly related to school business or at least vaguely to do with something educational?

Grin so do I.
I'd tell school that they are indeed in breach of the data protection act.
Parents have agreed to school related messages, not adverts for businesses. Maybe Tesco will get sent out next - its the same rule breach by the school.

My school used to do this for some kind of slimming boot camp. I complained (nicely) and was told it was OK because it was "in keeping with the school's healthy eating policies" (!) but they did say they would review their decision and it hasn't happened again.

My next target: all the crap that comes home in the school book bags. I used to think they were being helpful, letting us know about courses, clubs, etc. Now I have found out these external, profit-making companies pay the school a fee to bombard us with their adverts.

I feel another complaint coming on. EXCEPT two of these companies are small businesses run by parents who I am friendly with. Dilemma...
