4 week old baby - severe sunburn

AIBU to be utterly shocked?

Just seen this reported - a 4 week old baby has been rushed to a specialist burns unit suffering from severe sunburn.

This particular burns unit has treated many under 14's for sunburn serious enough to need specialist treatment.

There is no excuse for this that I can fathom, no excuse at all.

The poor mite could have died.

That's just disgusting.

complexnumber · 18/07/2013 22:44

Bring on self-righteous indignation...

phantomhairpuller · 18/07/2013 22:45

This makes me feel sick Hmm

LittleNoona · 18/07/2013 22:45

I genuinely can't see how anyone could leave a 4month old to burn like that Blush

Poor little scrap.
Even a tiny burn on My leathery old skin is excruciating :(

dontlaugh · 18/07/2013 22:46

Or righteous indignation Complexnumner, to be fair, no excuse for that.

Sad
ImagineJL · 18/07/2013 22:47

complex why can't we be indignant? I find it hard to imagine a situation in which a 4 week old could be sunburnt that wouldn't provoke that response.

lj123 · 18/07/2013 22:48

WTF! That's ridiculous!

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 18/07/2013 22:50

I am not sure how that could have happened unless the parents are of suck low intelligence that they somehow did not realise that prolonged exposure of skin to strong sun causes severe sunburn.

Sparrowlegs248 · 18/07/2013 22:58

Ugh. Saw this on the news. I don't (yet) have children but am constantly amazed by these stories and the things i see 'in town' on a daily basis. Does common sense no longer exist?!

I find it very easy to imagine such a situation. A baby is put to bed in a moses basket which is in shade so their parents think it is safe. When the sun comes up very early in the morning the sun is in a different direction and comes through the window directly onto the moses basket and it's no longer in the shade. But the sleeping parents don't realize because they're asleep.

And that's just the first thing that popped into my head in two seconds.

There are reasons why this could have happened without neglect but why let that get in the way of having a good froth at the mouth with no idea what the background is.

MammaTJ · 18/07/2013 23:03

The only, and I mean extreme explanation I can think of for ths is that the baby has suffered due to reflected sun burn that the parents had no clue that the child could suffer from at all.

steppemum · 18/07/2013 23:04

Actually dh and I were talking about this
I think it is quite easy to see how it happened, they are not yet used to a baby and didn't know how quickly they burn, sitting in the garden, baby in a pram and go for a walk.

If their baby had been a few months older, it probably wouldn't have happened as they would be more up to speed.

very sad

IneedAsockamnesty · 18/07/2013 23:10

Of course stuff like this is going to happen, we live in a country where we are not used to sun as soon as it comes out thick people think the best thing to do is head outside into the sun.

Very few people realise that its actually dangerous or how sun protection works after all how many schools say apply it before arrival but we will not reapply during school and your child is not allowed to have it in school.i have lost count of the amount of people I come across who have no idea how dangerous sunstroke is or how it happens and how you stop it.lots of people act like tits.

Some people think the best thing to do as soon as the sun comes out is head to the nearest beach no matter how little there kids are. Test it why don't you bung a thread on here asking aibu my mum/ex/inlaws/friend wants to take my baby to the beach in an area with a level 3 warning, they intend to take all day,I don't want baby in the heat. And just see what happens.

Very few people pay any attention at all to any weather related warnings be they hot or cold

But yes it's horrible but not unusual last heat wave we had police officers and a social worker patrolling the beaches trying to get people to take babies home after a young baby nearly died.

ImagineJL · 18/07/2013 23:11

Bridget they could shut the curtains. I can't imagine many people would want their baby to have lots of sunlight shining in at 5am anyway, as it would wake the baby and deprive the parents of sleep.

steppemum · 18/07/2013 23:14

BTW I think the baby was on the beach?
may have mixed 2 stories up though

CoolaSchmoola · 18/07/2013 23:17

Newborn skin burns so quickly, with far less sun than even a six month old, that coupled with a heatwave and new parents makes it most likely to be a tragic accident than neglect.

LittleNoona · 18/07/2013 23:18

I think I was a little bit U, but I was just really shocked to hear that about a 4 week old.

Fucking idiots
