regarding high risk obesity gene

I think I have it.... this sounds so very like me....particularly the protein working better than anything else to reduce appetite.

So anyone else think they are in the 1:6 with a high risk obesity gene?

AIBU to think it really does help to know WHY it is harder for some people to lose / keep weight off than others?

ICBINEG - no wonder you're hungry if you're eating all that sugar! You are significantly and quickly elevating your blood sugar levels, which means a huge release of insulin to deal with all the sugar, followed by a massive crash in your blood sugar levels - which means that you are hungry very quickly again.

And you're eating a low fat diet too - fat is not harmful and is it also satiating.

I doubt, to be really honest, that there is that much of a genetic component to this - you're just eating the wrong foods.

You would be far better off eating something like eggs for breakfast, or a full fat natural (unsweetened) yoghurt. Then for lunch, some form of protein with a salad - not just fruit on its own, which is pure sugar.

Similarly for dinner - some form of protein (ideally a fatty cut of meat/fish), with salad and low carb veg.

If you do this - i.e. keep your carbs low - you won't have to worry about your calories. And you certainly won't be hungry.

BIWI, she's not eating loads of sugar Confused She says she's getting only 1400 cals a day, so there's plenty of room for egg & toast with the fruit for breakfast, a ham sandwich with the lunch and a (fatty) pudding with supper ...

Garlic- having just fruit for breakfast and mainly fruit for lunch is a lot of natural sugars. They will make sugar level spike after just fruit for breakfast then dip again an hour later which is when iceberg is saying she's hungry. Same after lunch as virtually no calories then banana and satsuma.

If they ate a boiled egg and some Greek yogurt with some fruit in the morning it wouldn't cause such a sugar rush then dip.
If they ate a regular lunch with a piece of fruit they wouldn't be starving an hour, 2 hours later.

Surely no weight loss would occur as body is going into starvation mode on just fruit for 3/4 of the day.

garlic - she is eating loads of sugar. All that fruit is dealt with by the body in the same way that it deals with 'ordinary' sugar.

ICBNEG - If you replaced all or most of the calories you're currently consuming in fruit with equivalent calorie value of lean meat, eg chicken breast or similar, I am confident you'd spend a LOT less time feeling hungry.

I've no clue how much to believe this gene business. I'm not really sure it's such amazing news anyway that protein is more filling for longer - you don't need a special fat gene to notice that. But I do think a major difference in the last 40-50 years - along with becoming more sedentary - has been the way sugar has crept into everything. It's addictive, nutritionally worthless and a major contributor to countless diseases as well as to weight gain, and if you eat any kind of processe food it's in absolutely everything. fat isn't bad, at least natural plant/animal fats aren't. The killer is sugar, and more generally starches.

Thanks, both - looking again, it's a large proportion of fruit, which isn't even an efficient diet for chimpanzees Wink YY, ICBINEG, you be needing big, strong food! I would disagree with BIWI over carbs, for numerous reasons, but I know she's an evangelist ... let's just say I'd recommend more bulky & fibrous carbs with your luverly meats & butter - wholemeal bread, potatoes and such.

Have we scared you off your own thread yet? Grin

I suppose I am an evangelist - but that's because all the stuff I have read has convinced me that carbs (even if they are wholemeal) are simply not worth it.

And when someone is complaining of being so hungry/gaining weight, I can't help but point the finger at carbs!!!

Sugar is not nutritionally worthless!

Too many of us eat too much simple sugar, is all. But OP's example didn't contain any refined sugars; fruit does provide complementary nutrients and fibre to retard the sugar take-up although it's still 'sugar'.

Is why I rarely drink fruit juice, as it goes - your body doesn't have to work to get at the sugar in juice. If I'm going to have easy sugar, I'd rather drink vodka Wink

no, no you haven't frightened me off...

thats a good point about all the fruit sugars.

It's the pictures off technos website though...a tiny tiny bit of butter versus the bulk of all that fruit/carrots...

I guess it would be a leap of faith...

I used to be a massive consumer of 5 a day - satusmas, pears, berries, melon... fruit central here. I was also about 2 stone overweight and gaining.

Joined BIWI's low carbing thing at new year and lost the whole bloody lot with virtually no effort at all.

I now see rice, bread, pasta etc as unnecessary 'bulk' I don't need. Fruit is restricted to in season berries with double cream on a weekend or special treat only.

I luuurve carrots :) They taste sweet to me and I eat them like you eat fruit, as well as padding all my tedious low-cost meals with them. Hope they stay cheap!

I do believe my budget-imposed, massive shift to carbs has contributed to my weight gain. I still think Carbs Are Good (pax, BIWI,) but they are way more than a third of my plate these days. Been eating chicken risotto for the last 3 days as end of fortnight, but was wilting with hunger this afternoon - went and spent my last pound on Scotch eggs and bananas. Honestly, that Scotch egg made me feel like ... anybody remember Popeye with his spinach? Like that!

Carrots taste sweet because they are full of sugar Sad

Why do you think they make cake with carrots? It's because they are full of sugar!

Oh dear. Going to wade in as an exerciser. Baffled by the chemical balancing act that is low vs high carb - i know it works but bodies would be so much healthier to manage energy reserves via exercise. Burning 200 calories is really shit.

:) I know carrots have sugar! But:
100g carrot - 4.7g sugar
100g apple - 10.4g sugar

So not really "full" of sugar, hey. And they're versatile, fibrous, filling, and cheap. They give me Vitamins A, B, and minerals. They make my beige budget concoctions look pretty. Carrots are my friends.

Carb counts for carrots vary depending on if they are young or old, and often they are higher than that. But I agree, they are nutritionally very sound. I will not steal them from your vice-like grip! Grin

Undertone - exercise is important for our health but does not always help re weight loss. Diet is much more important in this regard.
