DS 18m has tonight decided he cannot go to bed without his sun hat on. It sounds cute but it's driving me insane - obviously I don't want him to have it on in bed because it doesn't really stay on (is one of those madchester bucket style jobs) and I fear will suffocate him in the night. But he made such a big fuss (think banshee screaming wailing kicking shouting screeching) I had to capitulate and let him wear it. Snuck in 10mins ago to extract the hat from sleeping DS and it was caught under his head, woke him up in the attempt. Cue 10 minutes major meltdown. I had to give in yet again (yes I feel terrible about this) because the way he was carrying in I thought he would injure himself/lose his voice/cause the neighbours to think something awful was going on.

Now he's sleeping, triumphantly, with the hat on. How on earth do I get it off him? And how does anyone survive the terrible twos, assuming that is what this is?

Think yourself lucky that it's just a hat. DS has a spatula that he can't be parted from. Confused

ZingWidge · 16/07/2013 01:14

last week my 12 year old fell asleep with his laptop on his chest.

it never ends! Grin

SupermansBigRedPants · 16/07/2013 01:28

Ds is 20 months and has since 5 or 6 months went to bed with some sort of metal objects - screw, allan key, screwdrivers, ratchet, spoon, baby spoon - basically anything with a metal part!

he is addicted to metal, hopefully he grows out of it Hmm seeing him cosy down with his phillips Screwdrivers and huge bob the builder teddy is pretty though :) a hat wouldn't bug me compared to his love of metal Grin

MidniteScribbler · 16/07/2013 02:14

SupermansBigRedPants you need to get him the bob the builder construction hat and tool belt to go with his screwdrivers and teddy :)

ZingWidge · 16/07/2013 02:17

base metals are ok, but watch him if he starts collecting object made from precious metals!Grin

Onesleeptillwembley · 16/07/2013 06:59

Ds3 (18) is currently in bed sans the shoes he insisted on wearing every sodding night at the age of 3. What I'm saying is; don't sweat it. It'll pass. Grin

icklemssunshine1 · 16/07/2013 07:09

This makes me feel so much better. DD turned 2 last week & the tantrums we have when she decides what's her new favourite plaything is unbelievable! How can a child's grip be so strong? There is so much stuff in her cot that one day there won't be room for her! Can not take anything out though - she knows!

Buzzardbird · 16/07/2013 07:12

Just keep in mind that 10 mins is not long enough for your little ones to be in deep sleep and that is why they wake when you try to retrieve objects. 20 mins minimum especially when removing tiaras etc that might be tangled in hair.

My 2 year old slept in a nylon robot costume last night, despite the heat - I removed his duvet and opened the window (thankfully we can open ours at an angle so no climbing out danger). I would have preferred he sleep in loose cotton PJs and a nappy as usual, but he was determined he was a robot, and he has always been a bad and a light sleeper, so I worked around it! :o He also wants to take his scooter everywhere with him atm so it will be going in the car with us in a minute ... he took it in the car to the cinema yesterday (but I did make him leave it in the car, he just didn't want to leave it at home "on its own" Confused :)

SamuelAndOscarsMummy · 16/07/2013 09:52

My 2 year old sleeps with a whole zoo of teddies & even those little plastic 'minions' from mcdonalds, I don't think the hat would of been a problem :)

FlankShaftMcWap · 16/07/2013 10:41

DD2 has a knitted, fur lined deerstalker hat complete with ear flaps that has been permanently attached to her head for 2 years now. Height of summer, sleeping in her underwear because of the heat, yet the damned hat is firmly upon head.

No amount of explaining or lamenting the sweat matted hair will change her mind! It is incredibly cute though, although she is 8. As exasperating as it is, when I peek in the bedroom to watch her sleep and see her hat framed pink little face with tendrils of hair sticking to her cheek, I have a little heart surge for my lovely odd little Aspie Smile
DD3 has gone to bed in her sparkly ballet shoes for weeks on end, I do have to retrieve those as the stinky feet would be unbearable Confused

ithaka · 16/07/2013 10:44

My nephew used to insist on going to bed with a teacosy over his head for years. He is perfectly lovely well adjusted teenage boy now.

NotAQueef · 16/07/2013 10:50

I am actually surprised DS (2.8) hasn't tried to sleep in his hat.
His cot is full of all his books, and some of his little toys! I have given up trying to stop this as it's just not worth it. Although I did draw the line at a giant helicopter at the weekend - mainly because it's nearly as big as him and has lots of noise making buttons that I didn't want to listen to going off all night
He has been known to sleep in his wellies. I think it's cute.

Olbasoil · 16/07/2013 11:04

Ds4 aged 2 insists in sleeping in a deck chair with big white feather, fircone , London eye guide book and a radio times with a " nice lady " on it !

As long as he sleeps!

MummytoMog · 16/07/2013 11:15

DD slept with a vest, flannel pjyamas, a duvet, a fleece blanket and a quilt on last night. I snuck in after ten minutes and removed everything but the vest before she got heat stroke. Honestly, I just couldn't face the thirty minutes of screaming it would have taken to reduce the layers before she went to sleep. She's nearly four.

MummytoMog · 16/07/2013 11:16

And 2 year old DS went too sleep with a watering can filled with stones. I removed the stones after he was asleep, in case he tried to eat them in the morning.

SupermansBigRedPants · 16/07/2013 11:36

MidniteScribbler he's got the hat Grin but no matter how many toy tool sets I buy he'll give them 5 minutes, realise that they're plastic and not touch them again Confused just now he's pottering with a 3 inch bolt

zingwidge if he starts that I will worry - I've no jewellery other than my engagement ring so christ knows where he'll be getting it from! My wee gollum Grin

PeteCampbellsRecedingHairline · 16/07/2013 11:42

10 year old DS1 went to bed with his scooter. This was about 6 months ago. Grin

DS2 has taken to wear his bow and arrow. That is very hard to get off a sleeping child.

CrazyOldCatLady · 16/07/2013 11:50

15 month old DS fell for a sliced pan one day when we were shopping. He cuddled it all the way around the shop in the trolley, all the way home in the car, and into his cot. Thankfully be the next day he'd forgotten and happily let me put bits of it in the toaster for his breakfast.

ZingWidge · 16/07/2013 11:54

superman
another thought - has he swallowed a magnet?
then maybe things just stick to him?!Grin

Grin Grin Grin @ wee Gollum!

monkeymamma · 16/07/2013 19:13

Very cute stories here! They are keeping me sane as we endure another horrific bedtime. DS just Does Not Want to go to bed and is having a huge screaming tantrum with DH upstairs. It's so horrible; I could honestly cry right now. This is so completely new.

DD2 regularly sleeps in wellies, woolly dressing gown, woolly hat and mittens. In all weather. I have managed to loose the scarf but I'm passed the age of thinking its the terrible two's, she's 4 and shows no sign of stopping.

God knows how she doesn't over heat.
