My fridge has stopped getting cold. Am I unreasonable to think it should last longer than 18 months. Unfortunately I bought it from Comet so I can't even complain to them.

Ours is 18......years. So yanbu.
Can you contact the manufacturer?

chunkythighs · 15/07/2013 10:48

I wouldn't recommend a pointy hot fridge. (Gettit?). It's a toss up to figure out which was worse-the fridge or the customer service!

Anyway, just avoid pointy hot fridges. Actually just do a quick google before you shell out nearly ?800 on a fridge that gives you jip after a few years!

Contact the manufacturer; conmsuer durables should last for a"reasonable" amount of time which is generally thought to be a minimum of three years for the bigger items.

chunkythighs - eh? nope sorry don't get it. Also where did you get the figure of ?800 from?

YANBU. I have just had to buy a new fridge-freezer as the door hinge on my previous one was failing. It was 21 years old. I would cry if an 18-month-old appliance failed!

Contact Trading Standards. They have a list of items with an expected length of 'life' before going wrong.
If an item does go wrong before that time, it is not the manufacturer's responsibility to repair or replace, but the person/firm who sold it to you - CURRYS.

Same applies to boilers- which 6 years. The plumber who charged you for it is legally obliged to mend it for free Hmm

If they refuse you have to sue them in the small claims courts.

anklebitersmum · 15/07/2013 14:11

If I remember correctly it's 3 years life on an average priced large home appliance and if you had it on finance or credit card then they may fight on your behalf too.

I had a pointy fridge freezer. The thermostat kept going, starting at 10 months. Ok, they kept fixing it, but eventually we gave up and got a new one.

Sallyingforth · 15/07/2013 16:29

Is it a free-standing fridge or built-in to units?
Often built-in fridges are not given the air circulation they require to operate correctly and then prematurely fail. A neighbour of mine got through two fridges in three years for this reason.

Iwishitwouldgetwarmer · 15/07/2013 17:40

Thanks for the helpful replies. I'll get in touch with trading standards and see what they say. Unfortunately I got it from Comet which has now ceased trading so there might not be anything that can be done.

It was a Proline integrated fridge Sallyingforth so maybe that's why it hasn't lasted long.

Have a look in the instruction book to see what it says about ventilation, and check whether your installation provides enough. The last thing you need is for a replacement to go the same way.
