To keep losing weight while pg

I had my DS exactly a year ago but have become unexpectedly pregnant again, i am 7 weeks now

I didn't manage to lose all my baby weight from DS, but had been starting to drop an lb or so a week in the last few months from eating more healthily and salsa classes. BMI was about 26 and now down to 24.5 or something (pre DS it was 22 ish)

I was really hoping to keep the weight loss up, as it's making me feel a lot better about myself, but is this feasible in my first trimester? And is it healthy? I know I'm not overweight but I still feel 'big' for me. Has anyone else done this? I don't intend to go crazy - I've been having three good-sized meals a day (cereal+fruit, soup and sandwich, spag bol) but avoiding snacks unless hungry and that is about it.

I would really like my weigt gain this time to be mostly bump not flab!

Peach I'd speak to your midwife - eat healthily and walk everywhere.
You are within a normal BMI range.

IneedAyoniNickname · 14/07/2013 23:47

As long as you eat healthy balanced meals you'll be fine. And congrats :)

McNewPants2013 · 14/07/2013 23:48

she is doing fine now, taking alot of work but i always ask the question now.

WilsonFrickett · 14/07/2013 23:52

I lost loads in first and actually second trimester. apparently wine makes you fat. Who knew? so I would say stick to eating healthily and you will do fine. And congratulations!

selsigfach · 14/07/2013 23:53

Oh I'm sorry, I missed the salsa bit (sounds far more fun than swimming)! Good luck with getting back to where you want to be and well done for giving your baby a healthy start to life inside you.

Peachsorbet, I'm also unexpectedly 7 weeks pregnant and have lost over 2 stone with SW since Feb and aim to keep losing for as long as I can. I think as long as you're eating a healthy, varied diet and not going hungry, it's fine. My friend ended each of her 4 pregnancies lighter than she started because she was so sick all the way through. All 5 of her children are fit and healthy.

Congratulations, by the way!

The weight loss stopped and then slowly started switching the other way at about 18 weeks. I don't think its advised to try and lose after about 20 weeks - I'm just about maintaining my weight at the moment, but I'm overweiht so just eating well is enough for me.

MortifiedAdams · 15/07/2013 08:41

I lost weight during the first 20wks last pg and at 6wks pg am starting to lose it again. Im.not doing anything different to prepreg apart from.no booze (maybe thats it!!).

I know I will start to gain after 20wks just like last time so will watch what I eat from then (not diet but sebsoble foods).

My friend was very overweight when she fell pregnant, obese in fact, she was at weight watchers at the time and continued on a special programme. It can be done but I would recommend speaking to someone properly about it to be on the safe side.

A BMI of 25 is top end so I think some of the comments have been a bit daft. I am nearly 1.5 stone over a comfortable weight for me at a BMI of 25 and I am not that thin (size 10 at my very lowest weight)

gnittinggnome · 15/07/2013 13:27

I'm jealous of your healthy BMI, although I hear you that it's still too heavy for you! I'm pregnant too, but oveweight, and trying to not put anything on!

My "what to expect..." book recommends putting on maybe 1kg in the first trimester, then 1/2kg a week for the second trimester, and then you'll be topping up more slowly throughout the third, but then everyone is different and will develop differently. At some point though, likely after 12 weeks, but possibly not till 20 weeks, you will have to accept that putting weight on is good and healthy and proper for the little one.

My thoughts are that if you listen to your body, eat when you are hungry, eat wholesome healthy foods and get the right stuff, and continue to exercise without knackering yourself, you'll be fine. In fact, you're probably already doing all that anyway with your weight loss regime so far, so don't fret! Enjoy not having to have the extra blood-sugar blood tests that us plumptious ladies will be subjected to :-) And congrats on the pregnancy, and I hope you can enjoy it!

Congratulations to you.
Just don't eat: crisps, biscuits, crappy chocolate bars, sugary cereals,
sugary drinks, cakes and you'll do really well.
They are all foods packed with calories and hardly any goodness.

Best wishes to you.
