Agggghhhhhh! There needs to be a test to make sure that you have basic manners/intelligence/common sense before being given an eBay account.

I listed an Ikea Expedit bookcase that the auction ended for on 4th July. I stipulated in my listing that I would like the seller to contact me immediately after auction end to arrange a time/date for collection as I had new furniture coming. If they couldn't collect within a couple of days, my dad was going to store it in his summerhouse. Also specified that I would like payment within 24 hours of auction end or if not possible, please let me know.

So, someone won it. I messaged her 24 hours after auction ended to say "Hi, what would you like to do about collecting the bookcase? Look forward to hearing from you soon!" No reply by 24 hours after that, so I sent another message saying "Sorry to pester but I must arrange a collection date for the bookcase as my new furniture arrives on Monday and I need to know whether to keep it here for you or put into storage. If I get no reply by this time tomorrow, I shall take it that you no longer want the item. Look forward to hearing from you."

Nothing.

So I sent a second chance offer to the next highest bidder. She accepted immediately, paid and collected the next day.

Then....TODAY the original winner blithely messages me on eBay and says "Hi, can I collect on Tuesday?" I explain that it has gone, as I had heard nothing and I didn't think that a ten day wait was acceptable in waiting for contact. She has gone mad saying that I am in the wrong and how dare I sell it to another blah blah blah...

AIBU? Honestly, I'm not sure. Whenever I have thought about bidding on large items on eBay, if I knew I couldn't collect pretty much straight away, I have messaged the seller saying as much and if it's been a problem, not bid. And if I win, I always message as soon as possible saying "I can collect on this day, is this ok for you?" It's basic eBay etiquette, isn't it?! Confused

You specified in original ad when you wanted payment and collection of item so buyer has no reason to quibble now.
She is just taking the piss. Probably bid on the item then thought she'd make you wait till payday.
Tell her to bog off and put her on your barred list.

pigletmania · 14/07/2013 22:20

No you were right, she should have the courtesy to reply to your messages, tough I say

dexter73 · 14/07/2013 22:21

You snooze you lose. YANBU.

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 14/07/2013 22:22

Yanbu! She's a dickwad.

thismousebites · 14/07/2013 22:22

For the record I had a buyer who bought a load of stuff off me in one particular selling period, then buggered off on her hols leaving me to wait and store the stuff till she got back......cheeky arse.

daisychain01 · 14/07/2013 22:24

Gosh such a fuss for some furniture (on the part of the first eBay bidder). . No disrespect but i cant see why she had to kick up such a fuss. Ignore, ignore, total timewaster.

Ezio · 14/07/2013 22:25

My mum and stepdad are ebay sellers, they would have done exactly what you did, as Dexter says, you snooze you lose, tough shit.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 14/07/2013 22:25

And as a point, I have been issued with a non-paying bidder dispute if I have proxy-bid on stuff and forgotten to pay in a A LOT less than ten days!

Am expecting the negative feedback....

LilyBossom · 14/07/2013 22:28

you were wrong, you should have filed a non paying bidder dispute first, and only when closed should you have done a second chance offer or relist. Now you have 2 lots of final fees to pay plus the first buyer can leave neg feedback for you.

also make sure you are paid in cash, not paypal.

DupontetDupond · 14/07/2013 22:30

Yanbu.

Fuck 'em

MarmaladeTwatkins · 14/07/2013 22:30

No, I prefer PayPal as I know that the buyer will come to collect if they have paid already.

I have sold furniture before on a "cash on collection" agreement and the fuckers never turned up. I don't have weeks to hang about whilst eBay go through the motions of seeing whether Doris is going to pay up or not. If it is for a small item, I will. But not for large items that need collecting.

OP posts:
MalcolmTuckersMum · 14/07/2013 22:33

If you're accepting PayPal for a collection item you're leaving yourself wide open to be fucked right over.

LilyBossom · 14/07/2013 22:36

you must never, ever take paypal for a collection item, nor for an item when a buyer arranges their own courier, and you must always file a non paying bidder report - you can do that within 48 hours of the close of auction & close 4 days later, no need for hanging around at all.

ShadeofViolet · 14/07/2013 22:38

I agree.

It they pay by paypal, they could come and collect the item, then claim they never got it so that you have to refund them.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 14/07/2013 22:40

Really?!

I never thought of that. People would do that? Even though it has collection only on the listing?! Shock

OP posts:
Tortoise · 14/07/2013 22:44

I agree with lilyblossom. You should Open a non paying bidder dispute before offering to someone else. Also agree cash only for collection to protect yourself.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 14/07/2013 22:44

And plus, I thought that eBay frowned on cash on collection because that way you avoid paying fees? I thought I was doing everything by the book?!

OP posts:
LilyBossom · 14/07/2013 22:44

yes they would - so you need to write on the listing cash on collection and if they pay by paypal you refund it and ask for cash.

thismousebites · 14/07/2013 22:45

You could just set your account to automatically open a no payer case after 3 days.
I ddi and I've had no problems since. If a buyer complains I just tell them that you wouldn't go into Tesco and buy something and offer to pay a week later.
3 days after auction ends is plenty of time in my opinion.

pigletmania · 14/07/2013 22:45

If she hasent paid she cannot give you negative feedback. I had the same recently with a fuckwit on e bay. I advertised a designer handbag on e bay, stipulating uk only bidders. Someone won the be auction, than proceeded to ask me all sorts of questions about the item, and wanted extra pictures which I took and sent. And asked if i could send it to her sister in Singapore.

Doh she should have asked before bidding idiot! Than I heard nothing, after messaging her several times about payment, I tod her I woul relist and I did ad sod th bag romptl with a nice efficient buyer. I looked on e baybfuckwits profile, she is not based in the uk but in USA! I filed a non paying bidder through. Bay, to get seller fees back, which she rejected. I contacted e bay who sorted it out.

Some peopl are bloody piss takers

LilyBossom · 14/07/2013 22:46

no, you still pay final value fees, paypal fees are separate and not relevant. ebay own paypal so always want the fees, and will not tell you that paypal is not safe for collected items. It is a huge, ridiculous flaw which ebay refuse to tell anyone about. Many people have lost their item and their money and there is no comeback for the unwitting seller sadly.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 14/07/2013 22:47

I didn't even THINK of buyers lying about non collection! :(

TBH, non-paying bidder disputes were something I didn't have time for here. I needed the item gone or into storage. But storage was a last resort hassle as I would have had to go and fetch a van to transport it, which would be an extra cost. You have to wait for the seller to respond before eBay will close it, IIRC and I didn't have days to hang about.

OP posts:
LilyBossom · 14/07/2013 22:48

and pigletmania, the only way to stop them leaving a neg is to open a non paying dispute, it is not automatically opened unless you set your account up to do that. And you sent a cancellation request which is different to a non paying bidder report.

thismousebites · 14/07/2013 22:48

Yes but if they pay through paypal then collect the item, you have no proof that the buyer has received the item like you do if you send through the post, do you?

LilyBossom · 14/07/2013 22:49

Marmalade - you did have time as you waited 10 days, you only needed 6. And you now have extra fees to pay, and risk neg feedback plus the buyer won't have received a non paying bidder strike either.
