To not mind the day but find the night time heat unbearable?

I'm all for this glorious weather but I'm really struggling with it at night. Even with the windows wide open I can't sleep. I'm going to be a right arsey git in the morning because I know I'm not going to sleep very well and then I'll start to drift off but it'll be time to get up with the DC for school.

Glorious sunshine during the day and a nice breezy night please! I don't envy you pregnant ladies this summer.

buy a fan

LaurieFairyCake · 14/07/2013 20:12

agree. The night heat stops me sleeping properly - I wake really often to piss like a horse, and I'm up really early to clearly work in the fields like my ancestors Hmm

I got up at 5 fucking am to make jam yesterday as I couldn't sleep longer.

fflonkl · 14/07/2013 20:13

I don't mind it myself but dd (15 weeks) is very ... hot and bothered by the heat. Plus I get very paranoid about taking her out and about as don't want her to burn/overheat.

YouStayClassySanDiego · 14/07/2013 20:15

We have balcony doors left wide open.

That's great but we've been bitten hard by bastard mozzys, tonight I'm setting up a fan with a bottle of frozen water set in front of it [ a Mumsnet tip] the moving air will piss them right off I hope.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow · 14/07/2013 20:18

Never mind the fan, buy an air conditioning unit for the bedroom.

It will cool the room down to 18 degrees and you will wake up refreshed and ready to face the day. Frankly, its the best £200 I've spent for a long time.

mylovelymonster · 14/07/2013 20:23

Two things - cool shower before bed and cold water bottle :)

HoldingHigh · 14/07/2013 20:27

I've been told about the cold water bottle one before but have yet to try. I think I'll give it a go tonight.

I've been telling DH for years about us getting one of those ceiling fans and every year we both go: "Yeah we'll look in to it." But it always ends up on the back burner and before you know it summer's come around again.

Have you got a loft hatch? Open it!

SueDoku · 14/07/2013 21:02

Years ago someone gave me this tip - it works..!

Get a cotton sheet, fold it, put it in the bath and spray it - GENTLY - with the shower head (you want it damp, not wet). Squeeze well, unfold, lie down on bed and drape damp sheet over yourself. Sleep the sleep of the just and wake under a dry sheet.

You're welcome Smile

Fakebook · 14/07/2013 21:44

Fan works fine for us. Shower before bed, minimal clothing Wink.

I've lived in hotter countries where it's 30-35+ at night. I used to survive with fans and spray bottles or sleep outside under the stars.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 14/07/2013 22:08

Yes, cold water bottle as previous posters have said. Fill with cold water, then a couple of hours in the freezer before bedtime.

SueDoku our variation of this is to put on damp nightie/pyjamas. Apparently putting on wet socks is also good but I've never tried it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/07/2013 22:10

If you have a large freezer pop your pillow in it.

Satnightdropout · 14/07/2013 22:15

I'm stuck in the maternity ward after having my son sat morning and it's stifling. Window only opens a little bit and there's no air conditioning . funnily enough it's not my daughter keeping me up all night it's this heat!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/07/2013 22:21

I think you must be very tired satnight.

scripsi · 14/07/2013 22:25

what is the bottle in front of a fan trick? I have a stomach bug and I could really do with cooling off.

pianodoodle · 14/07/2013 22:33

I'm also pregnant and hooooot!

The fan keeps me awake unfortunately :)

Will try some of the suggestions on here - a frozen pillow sounds lush.

Also DD 24 months doesn't want to wear clothes which is fine but she keeps taking her nappy off! I thought it might be a sign to try a bit of toilet training but it's all been a bit pissy round here lately!

There's no warning whatsoever, just the the sound of DD's mad laughter and exclamations "wow my bum!"

ManifestoMT · 15/07/2013 02:35

I second the wet sheet except I get a bath towel, wet it with cold water, wring out and then lay under it.

Bliss cool bliss

GoEasyPudding · 15/07/2013 08:16

NotSuch, may I ask what sort of unit you own?

I always assumed the smaller units don't actually work very well. Yours sounds great.

digerd · 15/07/2013 09:54

I am the opposite. When it gets humid with no air movement, I can't do anything during the day and lose my appetite.

My bedroom is coolish as on the ground floor and doesn't get much sun. Also open to fields at the back.
Last night it was only 22 degrees, but as from 3pm, I hadn't done much or eaten much but had drunk a lot of water, I woke up a few times to go to the loo! Inbetween, I slept fine.

Only once in 2006 I had 28 in my bedroom and I did have problems sleeping. I do have a cooling fan but the noise irritated me and turned it off. I am used to absolute peace and quiet at nightSmile

Pigsmummy · 15/07/2013 10:33

It was 28C in our bedrooms last night. It was so hot at bedtime open windows made no difference, I was wandering around like a mad woman at 0230am wafting curtains trying to get the cool air into the house.

I have an air conditioning unit but it needs an outlet for the hot air and if you try to put that out of the window it just comes back in. Worst purchase ever.
