To ask my new neighbours to...

...remove the bright green washing line they have tied to my tree, in my garden (to create their own washing line)? They didn't even ask me. I feel a bit miffed.

If your tree overhangs their garden, then they could cut off the overhanging branch and return it to you to be disposed of. They could reasonably say they are miffed that your tree encroaches on their garden.

Instead, they have made the best of it and put it to good use.

Of course, if their washing line in actually in your garden, then that's entirely different and I would be pissed off too.

Whether you are being U or not, really hinges on where the line is.

MrsWhirling · 14/07/2013 14:54

LOL! It's not overhanging in their garden & yes, I don't particularly want to garish green line wrapped around my tree. It's that they didn't ask which bothers me the most. They have been there a week and we are yet to meet .

Just take it off yourself
It could damage the tree if left long term

DaddyPigsMistress · 14/07/2013 14:58

Just cut it. They will get the message

JambalayaCodfishPie · 14/07/2013 15:02

Just cutting it is starting off badly though, if you haven't even met?

Just go round, welcome them, like you do with new neighbours, casually mention the line, say goodbye.

Then cut it.

weisswusrt · 14/07/2013 15:04

Untie it, and tie it to the fence. Then your not cutting it out of spite, just moving it. Message sent, in a non-catty way.

K8Middleton · 14/07/2013 15:07

Cut it.

WorraLiberty · 14/07/2013 15:08

Oh ffs what does the colour matter

gloriafloria · 14/07/2013 15:12

What did they do then, enter your garden to tie it on?? How rude! Just take it off (I'd wait until there's no washing on it as I'm not that evil!) and throw it back. If they can't be bothered to come and talk to you they deserve the same respect.

EnlightenedOwl · 14/07/2013 15:14

with neighbours you have use a bit of give and take. This is an occasion where I would "give"

Fakebook · 14/07/2013 15:18

Paint it brown on your end.

OddBoots · 14/07/2013 15:22

I'd be annoyed too if they haven't even asked first, I'd be happy to let them if they had asked first but just doing it when you first move in shows that they don't intend to respect your property so I'd remove it too.

RobotBananas · 14/07/2013 15:23

So its tied to a part of the tree which is on your side of the boundary? (not that it really matters I suppose)

Just untie it

RobotBananas · 14/07/2013 15:24

Don't tie it to your fence though, it might damage it.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 14/07/2013 15:25

Would it be better if it was red?

Justfornowitwilldo · 14/07/2013 15:30

Untie it. When it doesn't have washing on.

MrsWhirling · 16/07/2013 10:00

Hi all, thanks for your views! Well it's my tree, in my garden & not overhanging.

On Sunday I found a spare washing line pole we had in the back of the garden. I knocked on their door in a smiley way & said here is a spare washing pole as I noticed you have tied wading line to my tree.

Neighbour said thanks very much but no apology. Anyway, they still haven't taken it down!

OP posts:
primallass · 16/07/2013 10:12

I would take it down yourself now.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 16/07/2013 10:16

I'd be taking it down myself now too. Only tree near our house is our OAP apple tree, which I'm very sentimental about, so if they'd done this to me, I'd have taken it down as soon as I saw it. Blush

WildThongsHeartString · 16/07/2013 10:16

I would take it down too.

pictish · 16/07/2013 10:17

I would leave it there.

HeadfirstForHalos · 16/07/2013 10:19

I would probably just cut it, but then I can be hot tempered and impulsive! It would probably be best to just untie it, but dont leave it there, they are taking the piss.

PattieOfurniture · 16/07/2013 10:21

You said they've been there a week and you are yet to meet, then, you took them a washing pole round..so you have met them then?
Why didn't you say something then?

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 16/07/2013 10:22

take it down yourself. if they havent done so, so far, after you gave them the pole, then i doubt they will do so any time soon

the fact that they didnt apologise would piss me off too
