To ask for a bit of car seat advice?

Apologies for the non-AIBU but it's busy in here!

Ds (7) is in a high backed booster (Britax Adventurer). I've just swapped cars and I'm having problems with how the booster sits on the back seats. The seats are really flat (Ford Fusion) in comparison to my old car, and I'm finding if I turn sharply, the seat is falling over sideways, meaning ds is being practically strangled by the seatbelt, which he finds hilarious, me not so!

I nipped into Mothercare yesterday and, after looking at the car, was told all seats will sit the same, and with the absence of Isofix points (which surprised me as it's an 08 plate), there's nothing I can do! They suggested putting him in a normal booster, but he's quite small for his age, and only weighs 3 stone, so that's not something I want to do yet.

Surely there must be a seat that fits better than this?? I just don't feel confident that in a crash situation, this seat will offer proper protection. Can anyone offer any pearls of wisdom please?

Thanks in advance :)

Have looked it up on britax fit finder and it says they don't test high back seats as they are normally universal. Could you move him to the front and just push the seat as far back as it will go? I would not just use a cushion type booster if I could avoid it.

ARe there absolutely definitely no iso fix points Confused

heritagewarrior · 14/07/2013 10:33

Are you absolutely sure it doesn't have Isofix points? I thought ours didn't (05 plate Peugeot), until a fitter at Halfords found them for me. My understanding was that cars had to have them after 2006....

You could try one of the seat protector mats, they are rubbery so may provide some extra grip and stop it slipping. Also, make sure the lap belt part is snug across the top of the thighs, this will help keep the seat anchored.

coronalover · 14/07/2013 10:39

I suggest you get down to Halfords for some advice. They can check for iso fix and recommend a seat. My local shop is v good and I feel confident I've got the best fit for my car

Itsnotahoover · 14/07/2013 10:40

Yeah I thought all newer cars had them; my 54 plate Fiat did, and the Y reg Skoda I had before that, but I've pulled the seats forwards and cannot find any Isofix points Confused

I've thought about the rubber mats, might get one and give it a go! Just really not happy with how it is at the minute!

Checked the manual? Wonder if you can have them fitted?

Itsnotahoover · 14/07/2013 10:44

Just checked and it's "all new car models from 2006" that have Isofix - the Fusion, as a model, was brought out in about 2003 I think which may explain that! Would just be so much easier if it did have Isofix!

Yes I was wondering if I could have them fitted? I'm planning on keeping ds in a high backed booster for another few years so would be worth the investment.

He may be better off in the front seat then - just have the seat as far back on the rack as it goes.

notfarmingatthemo · 14/07/2013 10:47

this maxi cosy one has a strap thing that hooks on the seat head rest. Might be worth a try.

Double check that it doesn't have isofix as my dd is on the highest setting but has more to go on the britax isofix seat

noblegiraffe · 14/07/2013 10:59

Ford is shit for isofix, my 58 plate focus doesn't have it either. It's not standard unless the first buyer requests it.

You can buy kits to install isofix, they're not guaranteed safe I think but if you can't find any other solution it's worth a try.

NutBiscuit · 14/07/2013 11:32

I've got a Ford Focus which also didn't come supplied with isofix points. I got them installed by a Ford dealer and it only cost about £60. Might be worth doing for peace of mind?

Itsnotahoover · 14/07/2013 11:45

Thanks NutBiscuit I'll look into getting that done :)
