To take baby to beach?

I'm not am I.She is not exposed to direct sunlight.I have a pop up uv tent and her carrycot with a cover.I go early morning or late afternoon for three hours as I have an older child too.She feeds when she needs it and I keep her nice and cool and go for walks up and down the shore. The comment made today was ' poor baby'.My son and his wife are the opposite -won't let baby near sunlight.I found myself trying to justify the fact that I have the older child to take care of too and that baby is vey happy and placid.Surely all that lively sea air does her nothing but good.

Is it because it's be boiling hot inside a tent?

CointreauVersial · 12/07/2013 19:05

YANBU, as long as she doesn't overheat.

Ipp3 · 12/07/2013 19:06

I think it depends on how your baby reacts. It would be too hot for mine but not for some other babies

Drhamsterstortoise · 12/07/2013 19:07

No I make sure she's not hot.

We need SOME sunshine to keep healthy.

DragonMamma · 12/07/2013 19:12

It depends on whether there's any actual shade - those tents can be like sauna's on a hot day. If there's some shade to place there tent in then YANBU but otherwise I probably wouldn't bother.

Drhamsterstortoise · 12/07/2013 19:13

It's 23 degrees and I wouldn't expose her to the sun.Shes beside me all the time so I can check she's not too warm

As long as she keeps cool enough. My ds would have been miserable but you know your baby.

ThePowerof3 · 12/07/2013 19:16

Today was a lovely day for it, tomorrow not so much. Some people seem to need to pass comment for no apparent reason, poor baby indeed! Lucky baby more like

aamia · 12/07/2013 19:26

It will get hot indoors too. Shade outdoors is far cooler than stuffy indoors!

monkeynuts123 · 12/07/2013 19:38

I wonder why someone would say poor baby if baby looks cool and contended. A carrycot blocks the breeze. I wouldn't.

Drhamsterstortoise · 12/07/2013 19:42

Yes she is in the shade and we are a short walk from the beach.I wouldn't bring her if I thought she was too hot or uncomfortable.

Had her in the carrycot today with a linen cover over it.Brought her for a couple of walks and she was cool and slept.I suppose people are always going to pass comment aren't they.Older child is having a ball with all her pals swimming and making castles.

YANBU - what about all those people who live in tropical climates close to the beach?

As long as baby is in the shade and the UV tent is vented, spend as much time as you can watching your children enjoy themselves. Life is too short to be cooped up indoors!

FWIW, I used to take DS down to the beach from a week old, park myself under an umbrella, strip him down to his nappy and let him enjoy the warm breeze and sound of the waves whilst I read a book and dozed. It totally soothed him and was one of the best things about maternity leave.

Enjoy the weather, sounds like this weekend is going to be a scorcher!

specialsubject · 12/07/2013 20:08

it's fine - you are going outside peak UV hours, the baby will be shaded (watch for reflection, cream him up too) and in a breeze.

Drhamsterstortoise · 12/07/2013 20:22

Oh really re the suncream-I thought that suncream isn't recommended under 6 months. All the advice I read seems to say the uv tent and in the shade.Anyway gonna head out at 8 o clock tomorrow morning to be on safe side.DH is home at the weekends so he can stay longer with dd1.This being a mum business is hard work isn't it-Trying to make sure they are both happy and safe and yet someone always judges you!

Agree with the others. As long as your baby is kept cool, I don't see the issue.

Drhamsterstortoise · 12/07/2013 20:29

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Neither of mine minded the heat, both went on holidays when very young. Babies aren't known for their stoicism - she'd've let you know if she was uncomfortable. (I avoided sun cream too.)
