dd is two..despite a very varied diet, is getting constipated reguarly. she'll not go but clearly need to for a day or two, then we spend around 2-3 hrs of horrific sobbing..wondering around not knowing what to do with herself, in agony trying to push a solid, horid smelling poo. Her bum is red raw and it will be half in half out for hours. She's spread across my lap practically reinacting birth right now...its sp horrible for her..how do I stop this?

My LO had something like this. Was scared to poo so held onto it after a bad bout of constipation. The poo hardens in the colon and so comes it as a big hard ball at the end. You can also get some weak diahorrea as more fluid poo works its way around the hard mass.

In my LO's case, the poo became so hard that the colon actually changed shape from a downwards shaped funnel to having a more bulbous shape at the end where the constipation builds up, then it really hurts to come out. Do you have any more movicol? Plenty of fluids and see if you can get you GP to refer you to a specialist paediatrician who deals wth this can be of more help. You could also try ERIC which I found helped. Taking your LO's mind off actually pooing by singing or keeping her occupied help can help (did with mine) as it sounds like she's working herself up to the pain of the poo.

Sorry I can't be of more help - plus I'm only looking at it from my LO's problem. Hope you get some help soon

Avoid egg, yellow habana (overripe was okay apparently), wheatabix etc. Plus give a sachet of movicol every day - make sure that its movicol paediatric as the other stuff isn't licensed for the under 11's. Plenty of fruit juice and water and try to get your daughter to sit on the loo if toilet trained at the same time each day. HTH.

Kiwis? DD loves eggs so we have to balance it out. There's no holding a kiwi in for long!

The only thing that worked for my ds was califig. Maximum dose 3 teaspoons and after a couple of days it worked. I highly recommend it.

TokenGirl1 · 12/07/2013 21:51

Syrup of figs has been good for making my dd poo as she hates the taste of Movicol. Good luck.

TokenGirl1 · 12/07/2013 21:52

Yes califig is what I'm talking about, almost miraculous!

my dd had constipation for many year - we sought medical help but they didn't take it seriously. her poos age 7 are huge - can only think her bowel is stretched beyond belief. what makes her go - orange juice and chocolate together. it took us years to find out though.

Yes to movicol being a medium to long term thing, to break the cycle of withholding.

Take it regularly for ages for soft poos, give any fissures time to heal, get used to pooing without pain then gradually wean it down to a maintenence level or off altogether. Large doses at once to shift an impaction if they get very blocked up, but it's about retraining the bowel/building confidence in the child, so they are not fearing a painful poo and holding on so long that is has got hard and dried up and painful to pass.

Obvs, the longer the poo sits in the bowel, the more water gets reabsorbed into the body and the harder and drier it gets.

Fruit and veg very helpful, esp any fruits that usually have stones in - cherries, plums, apricots fresh or dried, plus ripe pears, kiwi. Not too much banana/cheese/white bread if that seems to worsen it. Plenty of fluids including fresh juices.

catkind · 12/07/2013 22:07

Have you tried sitting her on a potty? It can be a good position for getting difficult poos out, and if she's upset about the idea of pooing in the wrong place having a "right" place might help.

That and drinking lots of water and eating lots of satsumas seems to help dd.

Just be a little careful with figs/lactose/juice/movicol etc etc both dds have had constipation in the past dd2 (1 ) was terrible with it at 7 months was heartbreaking.

Back to my point! She "held" her poo through fear and it hardened I gave her lactose, apples etc but in effect that all draws water to the stomach to soften poo. It doesn't help with the hard blockage already there meaning they will get backed up and the excess watery stuff you have been pumping in will give them bloating and terrible tummy ache.

For that reason alpine I would go to gp for advice (it was my sil gp that pulled me up on it).

HappySeven · 12/07/2013 22:16

Definitely need to do movicol every day. My DD was like yours and in Feb I eventually went to the GP. He said to up the dose by two sachets a day until we had 'explosive results' as she was backed up. It didn't take much to be honest and she's now on a maintenance dose of one sachet a day. She's so much happier and poos once a day happily. The GP said she'd probably need to be on it for 6 months.
