School video on Youtube

My daughters' school had an official opening ceremony last week and I've just found out that the school had put the video of it on Youtube. Not one of the parents, the school. AIBU thinking they should have asked the parents' consent before airing it to the whole wide world for every Tom, Dick and Harry to see. Every time our school had a Christmas play we were allowed to take photos/videos as long as we didn't put them on Facebook and the internet in general. And now the school goes and does this.
At the beginning of Reception year we could agree to have pictures taken of our children by their class teacher to use in class, like in their Busy Bee book that the parents can have a look at anytime to see what their child is doing in school, but certainly not for the school to put a video of my kids on Youtube. I'm absolutely fuming

why?

The likeyhood of anyone seeing it except yourself and other school parents is extremely extremely low.

Although it wouldn't have hurt for them to ask the parents first I suppose

treas · 12/07/2013 12:52

Simply request that they remove it - and take it to the Governors if they do not

mrsjay · 12/07/2013 12:53

Did you not get a permission slip to show images of your children ? most schools send them out to parents , yanbu if you havnt given permission for your childrens images to be used can you see your children in the video ?

SsimTee · 12/07/2013 13:08

yes, I can see both of my kids and myself in the video, and no, we weren't asked for permission to have it broadcasted on the web

Are you in witness protection?

If not why do you care?

Edendance · 12/07/2013 13:52

Ah, it's a shame.

It seems to be a vicious circle of the more that photography and filming of children is limited and stopped (as well as publication of it) the more people feel like there's something wrong with it and request that it shouldn't be allowed... And so on.

I think it's such a shame that there's such limitations on it now. People who have 'other things' in mind with photos and videos of children will ALWAYS have access to it- so it's not helping to fix any problems by not allowing it.

Be pleased that you can send it on to friends and relatives and be done with it.

HeySoulSister · 12/07/2013 13:55

How can they allow you to video the school play 'as long as you don't put it on Facebook'?? Did you sign anything on that occasion?

ilovesunflowers · 12/07/2013 13:58

FGS. Why do you care? The school will have been careful to not include any children in care on the film. I don't understand why any other parents would worry about this. Do you think random paedos are trailing the internet looking for school videos?

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 12/07/2013 14:01

I'm surprised that the school didn't ask permission tbh. I would hope the HT at least made sure that there were no children in it who aren't allowed to be in photos. It's careless of he/she didn't

mrsjay · 12/07/2013 14:21

yes, I can see both of my kids and myself in the video, and no, we weren't asked for permission to have it broadcasted on the web

I know you are getting a wee bit of a hard time of why do you care etc but I think you are right to be annoyed id not like a video of me appear on you tube, speak to the school about it,

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 12/07/2013 14:23

The school would be the first to complain if photos made it onto face book or twitter. It works both ways tbh. Unprofessional.

mrsjay · 12/07/2013 14:27

I agree we are not allowed to take videos of anything a parent was asked to put her phone away the last school show it was only her child on stage at the time, It should work both ways,

It isn't even a case of peados or perverts getting a hold of pictures of kids it is privacy as well , If you dont want plastered all over the internet then that is ok,

icklemssunshine1 · 12/07/2013 16:16

My school sends a letter home each Sept explaining we use images of school/pupils for advertising etc and if you DON'T want your child's images published you need to send back the form - easier than asking for permission. Are you sure you haven't given some kind of permission, school generally have a permission slip to cover all public events?

HenWithAttitude · 12/07/2013 16:18

School have prevented us taking photographs ...yet they use them for publicity all the time. It's daft

Talkinpeace · 12/07/2013 16:24

Hen
that will be because THEY know who the children who must not be photographed are

I sign a form every year giving blanket permission

FFS once you see what they put on facebook and their own personal youtube channels, you stop stressing

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 12/07/2013 16:46

Yes but how many people would think of that? In relation to how many people would think "well if they can I will"

RaisingChaotic · 12/07/2013 17:14

Why do you care?

^^ That really irritates me when posters ask that. It doesn't matter why the OP cares, she doesn't have to justify herself/her reasons to anyone. The reason(s) are irrelevant, the fact remains that she doesn't want herself/her children on You Tube and should have the right to say no and have that no respected.

LastTangoInDevonshire · 12/07/2013 17:25

Is there someone you are frightened of seeing it? Because I wouldn't know you or your children if I looked at it.

If you are in hiding I can understand you being annoyed.

ravenAK · 12/07/2013 17:32

As PP said, school will have a list of students who aren't to be shown in external publications, & will have checked said list - which a parent videoing the Nativity is not in a position to do.

That said, if the opening ceremony was in public/outside then pretty much anyone can film/photograph it & do what they like with the images...different if it was within the building or even grounds?

mrsjay · 12/07/2013 17:46

I am going to sound ancient i am but I really get annoyed with video phones videos on facebook and you tube of EVERYTHING does everything need to be online for all to see,
