To wonder why school are making the kids take their blazers in this heat?

DS is just at the end of Year 7, so this is the first summer we've had at secondary school.

It's obviously boiling hot at the moment, but school (ordinary comp) are insistent that the kids have to take their blazers. So, he walks to school with it in his bag, puts it on just outside school to walk in, then is allowed to carry it round in his bag all day. By the time it gets home, it is a scrumpled rag.

AIBU or is this bonkers? Or is there some sensible explanation that I just haven't twigged?

yes i have been told twice ds needs his blazer

i have ignored them twice as no one is wearing it and blazers have a habit of growing legs and walking out of the classroom never to be seen again

VodkaJelly · 11/07/2013 19:36

My DS's school is the same. They also have to wear their blazer when moving rooms between lessons. I feel like asking the teachers to wear a coat in this weather and see how they like it.

Turniptwirl · 11/07/2013 19:38

My school was the same when I was a teen, we just lugged them around all day

AudrinaAdare · 11/07/2013 19:41

Mad isn't it? Carrying is not cool so DS is sweltering ridulously. Mind you, it's no more ridiculous than when she refuses to wear a coat in the snow. These rigid rules are quite infantalising. As long as they are in the correct uniform tgey should be allowed to decide how much of it to wear. Within reason < imagines students wearing blazers over bras like the Spice Girls>

natwebb79 · 11/07/2013 19:41

Vodka - as a teacher I can assure you we think it's batty too. It's usually a rule made by the governors/Head. I'm so glad I'm in a school with a polo shirt and sweat shirt uniform now. Smile

AudrinaAdare · 11/07/2013 19:42

I'm sure I corrected DS to DD Confused

JogOnKitty · 11/07/2013 19:44

Yanbu. Its ridiculous to expect children to bake in blazers in this heat. It reminds me of being at school and asking a teacher if I could remove my blazer. He refused because he apparently wore his blazer on a beach and he was fine. twat
Hmm

clam · 11/07/2013 19:55

My DCs otherwise strict Head Teacher has just sent a note home saying blazers can be dispensed with while this hot weather lasts.
Good for him.

clam · 11/07/2013 19:56

And even the dignitaries at Wimbledon (royalty/politicans etc..) removed their jackets on Sunday!

crazynanna · 11/07/2013 20:00

Yes dd's school sent us a text last weekend telling us no blazers necessary until further notice, but sweaters/cardigans must be worn.

SarahAndFuck · 11/07/2013 20:01

It seems a bit blinkered to make them wear blazers in hot weather, and I think the boys should be allowed to wear smart summer shorts as well. And the girls if they like, but at least they have the option of skirts.

Nobody could do their best work when feeling too hot and uncomfortable, it just makes people grumpy, tired and uncomfortable.

Glitterandglue · 11/07/2013 20:04

We used to have some weird rules. We could wear blazer, jumper and shirt, blazer and shirt or just shirt, but not jumper and shirt. And we had to ask every time we wanted to take a layer off. Supposedly, in the same way we had to stand up when a teacher entered the room which lasted all of about five minutes with most teachers who thought the rules were mental.

I thought this when I saw some local schoolkids yesterday - they were wearing blazers home from school in 30c - madness!

DrSeuss · 11/07/2013 20:08

Officially, my students should wear blazers unless I give permission to remove them, wear ties up to the nock and long sleeves with cuffs buttoned.
Unofficially...let's just say I'm in for a telling off if Senior Management come into my room. And I will get told off crazy as it sounds.

schooldidi · 11/07/2013 20:10

We informed the pupils at the start of the week that blazers and ties are not required for the rest of the term. I still had pupils in lessons today asking if they can take them off. They would melt if they didn't! We've even got some still wearing jumpers too, madness! Non uniform day tomorrow so at least they should choose weather appropriate clothing then (even if they have been told knee length, hopefully they'll ignore that bit)

AudrinaAdare · 11/07/2013 20:13

DD has taken to pushing the sleeves up on her blazer Miami Vice style Grin

EauRouge · 11/07/2013 20:17

Does this still go on? My old school used to have stupid rules like that. We had to wear our blazers in assembly, even in the summer, and stand up when the notices were read. At the end of year assembly in the summer there was always at least one child who passed out from the heat but they still didn't change the rules.

VodkaJelly · 11/07/2013 23:08

Fair point actually natwebb79 , it wasnt the teachers who decided this rule. Maybe the governers would like to wear a coat all day in this heat instead!

Sorry for blaming the teachers Smile

xylem8 · 11/07/2013 23:14

At our secondary school I think it is really unfair that the girls all wear a summer dress whilst the boys have to wear a collar, tie and long trousers

DumSpiroSpero · 11/07/2013 23:21

DD's primary school is the same. In summer they have to take their school jumper, waterproof jacket, hat and suncream in every day.

When she was in Year 1 I came dangerously close to telling the TA where to shove it after repeated phone calls dragging me out of work (home, school and work all within 5 minutes walk) because one or other of the required items had not come to school.

I had two in one week - firstly demanding a hat and suncream for sports day that afternoon, when it was overcast and a storm was forecast (and it was duly rained off). Three days later, 'Miss Spiro must have a jacket or she won't be allowed out for break,' when it was glorious sunshine and about 25 degrees Angry.

AudrinaAdare · 11/07/2013 23:26

I've always thought it was unfair that women usually need to wear tights, skirt and uncomfortable inadequate shoes in order to look smart for work when it's cold for the majority of the year yet the men are clothed and shod warmly.

This is based on observations from train platforms over a five year period Grin

TheSmallClanger · 11/07/2013 23:29

It is bonkers. But I expect someone will be along at some point, saying that it is absolutely necessary for maintaining discipline and instilling pride blah blah blah.

DD hasn't been wearing hers. I have had no irate calls or letters.

LynetteScavo · 11/07/2013 23:34

DS seems pleased he is allowed to take off his blazer. But he is still expected to wear his tie. Even DH and I had "tie off days" and this was in old fashioned schools in the '80's.

I'm not convinced wearing a tie in 30'C is conducive to learning.

FannyMcNally · 11/07/2013 23:36

If you keep your blazer on then you always know where your keys, computer stick, money, train card, timetable, asthma pump, epipen, padlock etc are! That's why dd3 never takes hers off. Transferring stuff to a bag would be fatal because the bag would be lost some time after the first lesson change!
