to think that the best part of DD's report was that she is learning to persevere?

Urrrgghhhh. Got DD's report this morning. At pick up this afternoon people were talking about them (this is reception year btw...). I didn't really say anything until someone asked if I was pleased with her report. So I replied that yes, I was very pleased, especially with the comment that she is doing very well at concentrating and persevering with all her subjects, not just the ones she enjoys. Response was "oh well, I guess she might be able to catch up next year" - actually she had "exceeds expectations" for a number of areas, with only 2 "emerging" areas (which I was expecting and we are working on at home), just that I am more pleased by the learning of perseverance and concentration. I didn't say anything, just smiled vaguely and wandered off.

AIBU to think that at age 5 the fact that she can sit and concentrate on something she ISN'T outstanding at is pretty important and I'm normal to be proud of that? Obviously I'm proud of her academic achievements, but this seemed to matter more IMO?

Absolutely agree. That must have been lovely to read about gourds. Congrats to her

Gourds???? Dd that was!!

Sounds like she's doing well. THe most important things for children to learn are how to concentrate and how to persevere.

YANBU. Would be thrilled if either of mine had that in their reports, which they won't. Hmm Grin

Ooh yes, I would love that. I am hoping my 8yr old will similar about his confidence ( he has a lack of it).

TBH I think learning the ability to focus and persevere with things that don't come easy is perhaps the most important thing to pick up in YrR as Yr1 is so much more formal and academic. The rest of it - reading levels and all that - is subject to so much change. Reading is something that just clicks really suddenly and a child who may be struggling along can suddenly 'get it' and leap ahead, catching up with everyone else. Writing is a tough skill to learn and it takes time and guess what? Perseverance. So be utterly proud of your DD. Flowers

Excellent. I am normal then! It was a totally fantastic report, even the "emerging" ones were written really encouragingly - we knew there was an issue around Easter, and the report did mention she's made progress since then but obviously still needs to work on them... I'm going to miss her reception teacher so much :-( just hope she stays to teach DS in 14 months from now...
