To refuse to swim on the east coast of Ireland because of the pollution in the sea?

DH thinks I am. We are heading to a holiday home on the east coast but I am absolutely not going to put a toe or allow the DC to go into the water. I just feel that its not worth the risk.

Maryz I've already accepted that I was BU and yes I was a child of the 70s.

I didn't choose the east coast it was a local fundraiser and one person offered use of their holiday home as a prize and dd won it.

Why are you going on holiday to somewhere so cold and poisonous? It doesn't sound much fun.

I would let the kids paddle.

hurricanewyn · 11/07/2013 22:05

I used to love a day trip on the Dart - we'd get a day ticket and go to Bray for the slot machines and fish and chips and then all the way to Howth for a walk around.

I can't seem to get as excited as a trip on the Luas when I go back now Sad

KobayashiMaru · 11/07/2013 22:09

Why? It's all still there.

hurricanewyn · 11/07/2013 22:12

The red luas line just doesn't feel the same - it's all stuff I grew up with.

The day trip on the Dart was something we did once a year when I was little. We didn't go away much, we didn't have a car, so a trip to the seaside (even if I wasn't allowed to paddle) was almost magic.

Probably if I did the whole Dart line now it wouldn't be the same.

Just growing up, innit.

Dollymount and portmarnock for me, great memories...

hurricanewyn · 11/07/2013 22:48

When I go back in the summer I might take the kids on a trip on the Dart. Even if they don't think much of it, I'll bribe them with the promise of a smoked cod & chips (exotic - only fresh cod here).

We went to Mosney too, Baby. I especially loved the Space Roundup ride in the fairground. I read somewhere a couple of years ago that there was talk of turning it back into a holiday camp once the last of the refugees left - no sign of that yet though.

hurricanewyn · 11/07/2013 22:49

Sorry, meant to say - Have a great holiday Baby

CiderwithBuda · 11/07/2013 23:02

We were a Dollymount family. No talk of radioactivity when I was a child. Mind you it probably hadn't been invented. I am old.

Egg and sand sandwiches and red lemonade and an ice cream if we were good. One towel between us. Getting home still covered in sand.

BabyMakesMyEyesGoSleepy · 11/07/2013 23:20

The big yellow wheel and the swimming pool window where all you could see was legs Hurricane. those were the days.

It would be brilliant if they turned it back into a holiday camp.

Living and swimming in West Cork, aibu to think a bit of radioactivity would warm things up a bit?

Nothing beats a cold swim in the Atlantic, and a rapid defrost in a hot car on the way home. Grin

WilsonFrickett · 11/07/2013 23:43

I am having a serious Maeve Binchy craving with all this talk of the Dart and Luas now...

A screwball, MaryZ.

CiderwithBuda · 12/07/2013 00:52

Red lemonade and Southern Comfort. Or yes Maryz - red lemonade and ice cream. We used to have that every Friday night while watching Charlie's Angels.

I came on here to defend my home area. Greystones beach is lovely, if a bit stony, I'd be more wary of the sharp drop just a bit out, than any pollution levels. If you are looking for sand, then Brittas, Silver Strand and -if it's still accessible Nun's Cove (we used to have to shimmy down a cliff with picnic bag in hand as kids Grin)

Instead I see it has been well defended and Maryz is making me all homesick/childhood-sick talking about red lemonade and ice cream Confused.

Is Teddy's in Dun Laoghaire still there? If it is, the OP should get the dart in there and feed her kids some of the probably pretty bog standard legendary ice cream Grin

BabyMakesMyEyesGoSleepy · 12/07/2013 08:19

RedLentil I'm in Cobh so hello fellow corkonian.
