This should not be happening in this day and age

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2359316/Yorkshire-cafe-owner-Martha-Renee-Kolleh-puts-sign-warn-customers-Im-black-woman.html

I am Shock, I did not realise that this can happen nowadays. This poor woman should not put a sign on her door warning people of her race. If I was nearer I most certainly would vist her cafe

Jst makes this town look like its full of nasty bigots

However if she has noticed the cafe dose better when her white assistant is serving rather than her being the first contact then it does make a point as folks won't know if Tracy is more welcoming than her until they engage.

I hope she does well out of the publicity, she sounds like she has my sense of humour!

EldritchCleavage · 11/07/2013 11:33

Some of you sound very very naive about the day-to-day reality for black people in this country. There is a lot of casual, unapologetic, in-your-face racism out there. Violence still, too. Not as much as there was in the late 70s and early 80s, but still a lot.

Good on her for standing defiant in the face of it, I say.

ThingummyBob · 11/07/2013 11:46

I know an anecdote does not a statistic make, but if it helps I know several wankers from Osset.

It has a small minded town feel to the place.

pigletmania · 11/07/2013 12:56

I agree Eldrich, there s still racism in society today, you have to be in the same situation as this woman to really see it!

Justforlaughs · 11/07/2013 13:02

I know that racism is alive and kicking today, I am sure that this lady feels that she is being victimised because of her skin colour, but I'd walk out over the price of a scone! £2.50!!

SoleSource · 11/07/2013 13:02

really? or do people see the menu offers and decide the food is not to their taste?

My DS would be in heaven in that café.

I feel sick on her behalf ..it got to be true hasn't it? :(

SoleSource · 11/07/2013 13:04

I hope she gets lots of new regular customers :) Pity she isn't in Birmingham :(

SoleSource · 11/07/2013 13:05

Because her food sounds yummy

TarkaTheOtter · 11/07/2013 13:07

I grew up in a town with very little ethnic diversity. I think her experience is completely believable and am amazed that so many posters on here are so sceptical about it.

SoleSource · 11/07/2013 13:12

My DS is dual heritage. Racism exists from all colours and creeds.

I just watched the video, I feel so sad for her.

Racist bastards

LRDLearningKnigaBook · 11/07/2013 13:15

I think this 'oh maybe she's imagining it/got a chip on her shoulder' is a bit naive.

I expect she knows best how she feels!

If I saw that sign, it'd definitely give me pause and I'd assume there was some story there, but it'd make me think for a moment, and I am guessing that's what she's chosen to prioritize. She's entitled to want to make a bit of a statement, IMO.

SoleSource · 11/07/2013 13:15

I love her attitude :) I want to go there with DS, he loves food

Technotropic · 11/07/2013 13:15

and am amazed that so many posters on here are so sceptical about it

This

If it were a sexism article virtually everyone would be right behind her.

She has my deepest symptathies and am glad she's trying to do something about it.

SoleSource · 11/07/2013 13:17

I agree LRD. Spot on

LRDLearningKnigaBook · 11/07/2013 13:18

I quite fancy going there too.

I hope I'd feel the same even if I didn't like the sound of her food, though! Grin

FreudiansSlipper · 11/07/2013 13:24

people can project their feelings without saying a word and others pick up on it. why would it stop me going in unless i felt uncomfortable about the way i feel myself

poor woman i hope people in the town read this and support her

and i agree too with LRD and Tech

FreudiansSlipper · 11/07/2013 13:28

i wonder if the owner was say disabeled and had received similar treatment how many times we would read chip on their shoulder in this thread

i doubt we would

SoleSource · 11/07/2013 13:30

That's so true Slipper.

FreudiansSlipper · 11/07/2013 13:31

sorry typo disabled

ThingummyBob · 11/07/2013 15:24

We should arrange a meet up in her café Grin I'd be in.

TabithaStephens · 11/07/2013 15:36

You can't make people eat at the cafe if they don't want to, regardless of what their reasons are. I've no doubt that some of it is racism, but most of it will just be wanting what is familiar to them. The clientele for cafes in small yorkshire towns is fairly old white people. Are they really going to be wanting Jamaican and African food?

EldritchCleavage · 11/07/2013 15:51

She's not trying to make people eat at her cafe. I suspect she just wants the overt racially-motivated disapproval to stop.

TabithaStephens · 11/07/2013 16:17

I don't think that is possible. She'll just have to wait for old people to die off and less prejudiced younger people to become her customers.

LittleSporksBigSpork · 11/07/2013 16:35

Presuming that older people are more prejudice doesn't recognize the fact that younger people fill the ranks of most hate groups and are the most active and outspoken members. The only way to combat it is to speak about and be actively against it, which is what she is doing, not sit around and wait for a magically less biased generation to come along - that's not going to happen. Silence only helps the oppressors and blaming the victims only maintains the status quo.

Her menu is posted outside of her cafe (so people know what she is serving before they walked in - which includes traditionally British dishes as well) and the sign was posted after it happened repeatedly (to the point her customers thought she should have done so sooner).

A meet-up there sounds lovely ThingummyBob Grin.

drudgewithagrudge · 11/07/2013 16:58

There is a sign outside a pub in Salisbury which reads

English Pub

English Food

English Chef

Is this racist ?
