He says that a 14yr old having a McLaren Lewis Hamilton duvet set is vanquish and can he have another one please.
I SAY a grown man would want this set so he is being unreasonable.I then said I would ask mumsnet.AIBU.

Living in rural Australia as we do, we have home made duvet covers and quilts, and home made sheet sets and lovely pillow cases and pure wool and cashmere hand knitted blankets for the bed. It's currently winter so I am sleeping in a mauve floor length Jane Austen styled nightie (we live in the snowy mountains) with metres of lace trim. It's not everyone thing but its all made to last so it must be well thought out.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 11/07/2013 11:30

Why do you need homemade duvet covers in rural Oz? I know you can't live close to any shops...but surely you get to town now and then? Grin Not that I wouldn't love a nightie such as the one you describe! Sounds dreamy!

curlew · 11/07/2013 11:34

My mother used to talk about going to the Snowy Mountains for holidays when she was a child in the late 1920s/early 30s.

Isoscelesnorks · 11/07/2013 12:21

I don't get to the shops very often (small son with ASD) usually for snatch and grab missions only. But I did find the most fab quilt supply shop today in a small rural town on an outing to the beach. Even DH wanted some fabric! He chose Galactica pin up girls. Life can be a bit tough so I enjoy what I can and bespoke home wares are so far going very nicely. Sewing entire bedding sets may not be for everyone but I enjoy having some very nice unique stuff built up over time.

Isoscelesnorks · 11/07/2013 12:24

Curlew did your mother catch the train? My mother is from Sydney and she used to catch the the Cooma Bombala train to the mountains in the 50's to visit some of the other relics.

We have designated duvets here

Me/hubby - red/black set or blac set

DD1 - tatty teddy or hello kitty or patchwork

DD2 - has got tatty teddy or minnie mouse but the little swine darling won't sleep without her itti blanket at the moment

Mandy2003 · 11/07/2013 12:37

DS (14) is still quite happy with his Next "Ready for Lift Off" space rocket duvet cover. And its navy! Happy to report no whitish accidents.

He also has a vintage Pokemon one which I really want to steal and convert into Lolita/Kawaii dresses that will sell for a fortune on eBay!

wonderingsoul · 11/07/2013 12:42

This thread is so vanquish! I am going to try using this on DD (11) and her friends on Monday - I'm on a school trip with Y6, will report back and let you all know whether 'vanquish' has legs in the long-term.

wonderingsoul · 11/07/2013 13:03

Poor males. They have a quite a short time to control their bedding!

Mum does it, they get fed up...choose something more 'grown -up'

Then they find a partner...Wink

ThreeBeeOneGee · 11/07/2013 13:44

One that I'm trying to introduce is the phrase "I really goved that up."

Use this to describe what happens when you take something you know nothing about and keep messing with it, when it would have been better for all concerned if you had just left it alone.

usualsuspect · 11/07/2013 17:29

Teenagers would shorten it to 'van' though.

That's so van.

SupermansBigRedPants · 11/07/2013 17:51

Ds is going to be so vanquish in a few years Shock he has:

2 bob the builder sets
Fireman sam
Thomas The tank engine
Green dinosaurs
Grey spiderman
And 'shares' dd1s very first bedding set - white with one side pastel butterflies and the other side pastel dots.

Good job he's not even 2 yet Grin

AaDB · 11/07/2013 18:15

I'm using vanquish from now on.

All my duvet covers are white. Ds 6 said they were too boring so I bought nice grey ones from Ikea.

wakeupandsmellthecoffee · 11/07/2013 18:31

Laughing at all the vanquish.lol

Dd is still using a duvet set that my mum bought for me about 30 years ago, white with a pattern of tiny pink flowers. Actually she got two as my sister and I were still sharing a room and sis still has hers too. They are fab, still look like new, feel lovely and cool and crisp and don't need ironing after they come off the washing line. They haven't even faded, you can't get quality like that nowadays .
I also still own my Thelwell pillowcase which is even older. One day I'll take it on the Antiques Roadshow Wink.

MerryMarigold · 12/07/2013 09:03

Surely vanquish is positive. It means to blow everything else out of the water. "That duvet set is VANQUISH, bruv."

van·quish [vang-kwish, van-] verb (used with object)
1.
to conquer or subdue by superior force, as in battle.
2.
to defeat in any contest or conflict; be victorious over: to vanquish one's opponent in an argument.
3.
to overcome or overpower: He vanquished all his fears.

Origin:
1300?50; Middle English vencuschen, venquisshen < Old French vencus past participle and venquis past tense of veintre < Latin vincere to overcome

jeanmiguelfangio · 12/07/2013 11:16

Oh this thread is so vanquish-given that one to my husband too, it'll be round the nick in no time!! So my local police force will help get vanquish going
My DD has planes, simply because I love it!! I goved that up didn't I? I am def a van mum.

Purplecatti · 12/07/2013 11:19

OH just asked if I could make a batman bedding set. Haha!
No.
I COULD. But I WON'T

Purplecatti · 12/07/2013 11:20

That is unless Christian Bale fancies coming in with...
