.... to think that cake smashes are utterly ridiculous??

my niece had a very expensive cake... a princess castle that was so well made and my sil went through so much trouble to bring it 25 miles to her party in my town..
refused to cut it or give anyone a slice saying she wanted to get it home untouched..... then let her destroy it... she did everything to it other than eat it....

i might sound boring here but i just find it an utter waste to blow that sort of money on something that will be wrecked in minutes

when i was a kid i was neglected, i was lucky if i got fed a pot noodle for my dinner. so i cant help but be abit when i see kids nowadays having so much money and expensive things at their disposal...

i heard its an american craze... but if it must happen, why not a cheapie cake thrown together rather than a beautiful expensive one?! i just dont understand it

Isn't this just blw with extra cake? Don't see what all the angst is about tbh, it's a cake. Baby eats cake with hands, after all you would hardly give them a napkin and cake fork (unless you want a quick trip to a&e after they stick it in their eye or something)
Baby makes a huge mess, has lots of fun and eats some cake. It's their birthday, if they can't eat their own birthday cake it's a poor do.
Disclaimer, the princess cake thing is way ott and very rude to bring cake to party and not divvy it up for guests, and for my comments above, I'm talking about first birthdays which is what the cake smash is usually for. And yes, I do find small babies with cake all over their face hair and ears very amusing (as long as I'm not clearing it up) as you can take photos and use them as blackmail when they are horrible teens.

I have some great pictures of all three of my kids covered in their first birthday cake. It's called giving them a slice and watching them enjoy eating it.
Don't need extra cake for this method either.
I don't get the point of a cake smash, it's just wasteful. And besides, should we be so openly encouraging children to think that they only get enjoyement out of things that are primarily sugar? You don't see many professionals offering 'broccoli smash' shoots do you?

If you want your toddler to experience the joys of cake , why not cut them a slice. They can mush and squish to their hearts content and some might even make it into their mouths. The idea that smashing a cake is for the childs benefit is rubbish, it's obviously for the adult's.

it is standard here in the states now, most grocery stores make a smash cake free if you order a real cake. I make cakes and have been asked to discuss several expensive and elaborate ones. it is ridiculous.

My flabber is well and truely gasted at all these people who order a massive cake and then don't cut it and hand it out at parties. It just seems so rude. Especially as the ones on this thread seem to have been provided free of charge by friends/relatives!

MN makes me smile sometimes. All this horror over cake smashing when a month or so back there was a HUMUNGOUS thread about cake punching.

Which is far more wasteful as they weren't even intending to buy or eat the thing afterward, just ruin it in the shop and walk off. I seem to recall this was considered hysterically funny and a Good Thing by those on that thread...

(btw I make cakes as a sideline and would be beyond frustrated if someone smashed one of mine, but actually, if they've paid good money for my work, they can do what they like with it afterwards, I don't own it...).

My friends & I had a cake done with pic printed on it for another friend all chipped in I went and got it and we had party at mine surprised friend with cake all went fine till she put it back in the box and took it home for her and her hubby didn't even get a nibble

No way would I let dd smash her birthday cake. I am a useless cook, but always make her cake. She WILL eat it, even if the icing is wibbly and it tastes a bit like feet.

I'm American. I got photos of my son covered in icing at his first birthday. I thought it was cute. But, it was just a slice of the cake. I gave him a slice and enjoyed watching him make a happy mess of himself with his portion.
