To be cynical by sudden turnabout in opinion of Murray

Funny how now that Murray is a winner, the tide of negative opinion has changed.

I have heard mainly nasty comments about him over the years, when he was just a young lad.

Also sick of people suggesting his supposedly dour nature is a widespread Scottish attribute. It's just downright xenophobic.

I always supported him, especially given he was a survivor of the Dunblane Massacre.

I think the glory hunters can go jump

I know what you mean, I've had people on facebook who would routinely slag him off posting about how great it is that he won Wimbledon Hmm

middleclassdystopia · 09/07/2013 16:27

People are so fickle....and fake.

As soon as you win, have money etc, the sycophants crawl out of the woodwork. I'm glad the crowd were behind him but I know a lot of those now bleating on about him were the same ones who said he was arrogant, rude, ugly etc

When he was just young and camera shy. I was always cheering him on but people have loved telling me how he would never win anything.

Have always been behind him, strangely way back was a Lendl fan as well and he always got a lot of stick.

ouryve · 09/07/2013 16:51

I've never had a bad word to say about him, tyvm Hmm. Some people are just plain serious and focused. It's his tennis that won Wimbledon, not smalltalk.

BoneyBackJefferson · 09/07/2013 16:53

If its any consolation I still don't like him.

Personally I think he comes across rude, arrogant and just generally a miserable twat! However I think his PR team have given him some coaching prior to the Olympics and he has improved a little.

I'm chuffed to bits he won the tennis, but I'm still not his, nor Tennis' number 1 fan.

thestringcheesemassacre · 09/07/2013 17:00

Yes agree with boney I still think he's a miserable git and I can't stand him.

SoniaGluck · 09/07/2013 17:00

I like Andy Murray, always have. I remember defending him on here last year as there were many slagging him off.

But people are allowed to change their minds, I guess.

It annoys me when people say Tim Henman was a rubbish player, too; you always get people rubbishing him. He wasn't as good as Murray, obviously, but you don't get to the semifinals at Wimbledon 4 times by being rubbish.Hmm

Begonia I was always a Lendl fan, too. Nobody else ever seemed to be.

mrsjay · 09/07/2013 17:00

he has Simon Fuller on his team him that made the spice girls famous Shock

bearleftmonkeyright · 09/07/2013 17:01

He won Wimbledon. It's a victory for Andy Murray, not Britain or Scotland. I was delighted he won. He deserved it. But I was highly critical of Jankowicz in the semis. But, he is an amazing player also.

Justforlaughs · 09/07/2013 17:02

I quite like Murray, and always have. Neither do I know anyone who has routinely slagged him off and have changed their tune now he's won Wimbledon Hmm. Very odd behaviour from anyone who does this.

intarsia · 09/07/2013 17:05

The documentary on bbc1 last night was really interesting. Worth a watch for those of you who still think he is dour.

Justfornowitwilldo · 09/07/2013 17:20

I love that he won. he obviously deserved to but also the LTA has spent decades trying to get a British winner and the person who's eventually done it walked away from their system because it wasn't good enough and went to Spain! It must really annoy them and the dinosaurs at the All England Club. I'm sure they're not pleased that he's not English either.

I admire what he's achieved and the fact that he's worked bloody hard to get to the stage where he's capable of winning a major. I admire the fact that he brought Lendl in to help him because accepting that you need outside help can't be easy. The changes in the way he is on court in the last couple of years have been huge.

NigellaLawless · 09/07/2013 17:23

I still can't stand him Grin

SilverOldie · 09/07/2013 17:25

I'm happy that he won but don't enjoy watching him play - that hasn't changed.

Madamecastafiore · 09/07/2013 17:26

I wanted the other guy to win. My opinion of him has not changed.

Justfornowitwilldo · 09/07/2013 17:27

As for what he's like as a person, who the hell knows? Some of the most creepy, unpleasant people come over very well when interviewed. No one behaves the same when they're being filmed. What does personality matter? FFS, Federer has won for years, sold thousands of watches and probably has a field of cows that have been presented to him ( the Swiss are odd) and who really knows what he's like? He's given dozens of winners speeches that really say nothing. That's what media training teaches.

MarmaladeTwatkins · 09/07/2013 17:29

Federer would get it.

NadiaWadia · 09/07/2013 17:29

I still don't like him much either. He comes over as a miserable git.

SoniaGluck · 09/07/2013 17:30

Justfornow Totally agree. I sort of said the same thing on the other thread but not quite so eloquently.

Justfornowitwilldo · 09/07/2013 17:31

If you want whiney British sportsmen try Lewis Hamilton. He can seriously drive (though he can't manage tyres) but when he's the radio to his team I've never heard anyone moan as much. He could wait and say it behind close doors later but chooses to pout for public consumption.

Yonionekanobe · 09/07/2013 17:32

Didn't the tide of opinion turn for him when he lost? The post-defeat speech after last year's final is often noted as the turning point. Including in last night's (very good) documentary when Henman commented that it was a shame it took that display of emotion for people to like him - not his clear ability on a tennis court.

redlac · 09/07/2013 17:34

Yes MrsJay he does have that dour face that many men round our neck of the woods have :)

I think the documentary more than the wimbledon win changed many peoples minds about him.

woozlebear · 09/07/2013 17:35

I didn't really like him before, and I don't really like him now Grin
