Any Law students or lecturers out there? DS wants to transfer to another uni

DS has just done year 1 of his Law LLB degree - likes the course but not the uni so wants to transfer to another uni ie do years 2 and 3 somewhere else, preferably closer to home (west midlands).

AIBU to think he can't just move to another uni and continue his degree ? Hmm

Anyone know anything about this sort of thing? Any guidance for him would be apprciated.

I know people who have done this. You have to speak to the course tutor at the uni you want to transfer to. They will tell you if the have any places and if the year he has already done fits in with their course structure.

Mockingcurl is right, AFAIK. A girl in DH's year did precisely that.

BTW - is he sure that a) his issues with the current university can't be resolved, and b) the move won't just result in a "same shit, different bucket" situation?

If the department is reasonably well run then any other issues should be solvable - he could consult the welfare tutor about any services that might help him (e.g. counseling service to help figure out why he is unhappy there and how to develop better coping strategies), join societies to break out of his current social circle and enjoy the city a bit more, visit home more often, change to different accommodation... All sorts!

I did this but with a different course. I would advise that he gets in touch with the regstry sections of both universities (always follow up with an email) to explain the situation. He also needs to get in touch with the course director for 2nd year LLB at the new university to find out if there is room for an additional student.
The exam results are out now so there will be people who will not be continuing onto the second year.

Whatever he chooses to do, he needs to do it quickly and formally as lecturers are notoriously hard to get hold of during the summer months. Also find out if there are any financial implications if he moves from the loans companies etc. If he does transfer make sure that he keeps all the paperwork to the move in one place in case any issues arise. All phonecalls must be followed upwith an email so he has a record. At this time of the year, unis use temps to help with the extra admin work so there's often a high turn over of people.

He needs to contact the admissions tutor at the uni he wants to move to asap and ask about this. It is theoretically possible assuming he has passed all his first year courses but it may be quite hard.

The first issue is places. But here there may be some slack, they may have students leaving too but the earlier he asks the better. It is actually easier to transfer on to yr 2 of a course than yr 1 at this point. Yr 1 is a bit of a nightmare for us because we are contractually obliged to offer places to all students we've given offers to with the right grades in August so a student rocking up who has completed the first year who is happy to do the first year again still can't because we may not have space for them (or at least won't know until end of August).

Main issue is which qualifying courses for his LLB he has already completed at his first Uni. There are 7 courses the Law Soc require all law students to take to obtain a qualifying law degree but unis decide in which order students take them. So if he has done land law already at Uni 1 and Uni 2 teaches land as a compulsory course in the second year he'll have a problem.

Has he spoken to his personal tutor at Uni 1 about what is making him unhappy and tried to address those issues? Are the issues to do with law in which case he might be better off looking for a different course? Transferring between degree programmes within the same uni is usually easier than transferring from one uni to another.
