to think dh is mad to seriously consider taking a 5yo and 2yo on a plane ... just to go on a plane?

DD1 and DD2 are aeroplane mad.

We can't afford a foreign holiday. We do not have valid passports.

Dh wants to fly to Scotland, Manchester, anywhere so the dds can experience a plane ride.

We are not exactly rolling in money. I can't imagine this not costing a small fortune.

AIBU to tell him is being daft and silly for getting the dcs hopes up about something we cannot afford?

Are you anywhere near Reading? There is an aviation museum in Woodley, although I'm sorry I have never been there.

GiveItYourBestShot · 09/07/2013 18:19

Maybe a local flying club would help?

JumpingJacks · 09/07/2013 18:27

I've looked at the White Waltham website and I can't see any private rides, I think its just lessons which is a shame.

We were at Legoland at the weekend and the planes fly quite close as they land nearby so we saw some great close ups of planes landing, dd1 counted 36 planes that day.

Why not? Go for it! You could go to the Isle of Man or Northern Ireland so they feel like they're in a foreign country.

GiveItYourBestShot · 09/07/2013 18:50

I was thinking more of phoning and asking. Though maybe taking passengers isn't allowed on a private licence?

JumpingJacks · 09/07/2013 18:54

I will phone tomorrow and ask Giveityourbestshot. Its a fab idea!

We phoned our local aerodrome and asked if we could pitch up for a look around. The man was brilliant and we had great fun. DS loves anything with wheels so tractors and diggers are more our scene, but we often just turn up at places to watch and the workers are always friendly and amused by DS's enthusiasm.

Duxford would be great for them. The museum is really well done (you can walk through one of the test flight concordes and that sort of thing) and they do pleasure flights in light aircraft there too.

JumpingJacks · 09/07/2013 19:31

I think I might do Duxford as a day out in the holidays.

Is it mainly indoors - something to do on a rainy day? Or is there a picnic area?

Fab idea, doing it myself soon.

JumpingJacks · 09/07/2013 20:56

Where are you flying from and to Sole?

OP posts:
Xmasbaby11 · 09/07/2013 20:57

That sounds like a lovely idea, if you can afford it.

SoleSource · 09/07/2013 21:15

:) I have been promising myself to do this for years. I was thinking Edinburgh, return flight about £140, then car hire £90, hotel £75 plus spending money for just one day/night.

How about a day out in London, including going on the DLR (sit at the front and pretend to drive), then have excellent dim sum at Yi-Ban by Prince Regent station and watch planes landing/taking off at City Airport on the other side of the dock? With some boats, trains and ducks passing for added value?

There's flights from S'hampton or Bournemouth to Leeds/Bradford, for a break in Yorkshire. Or go to Glasgow and then it's a short train ride to Largs and Isle of Cumbrae.

DS loves it when we got to Timms the Builders merchant in Brize Norton as if you got upstairs to the bath department you can see all over the airfield out of the windows
