To ask for quick advice about dd's high temperature and bloodshot eyes...

Have rung NHS Direct, who are surprise, surprise'exceptionally busy' and will call back within 6 hours.

I have no confidence in my own judgement on health matters after coming close to death myself following a spectacular under estimate of seriousness 2 years ago.

DD (6) has high temperature (between 39 & 40.5 depending on how long since she had paracetomol/ibuprofen, which I'm giving to maximum dose alternately) which she's had since yesterday. Complained of pain in one eye this morning, but I couldn't see anything in or on it, she did have some piriton just before bed as had said her eye hurt again, and I thought it could be hayfever or other allergy related.

She went to bed at 6, and her eyes looked fine. She woke at 9, complaining of a headache, and both eyes were very bloodshot, she had cool flannel on her head, some paracetomol and went back to sleep.

The eyes are worrying me though, especially thanks to Dr Googles diagnosis of possible Kawasaki disease Blush

So, WIBU to wait for NHS Direct call back, or should I ring OOH docs? As I said medical confidence is shot it.

When in dought get help. Pack her in the car and go to A&E. or phone emergency GP and take her to the surgery.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 08/07/2013 22:57

Go straight to A&E if the OOH doctor can't come. I am sure she's ok but you seem worried....that's a good reason to get help.xx

BlissfullyIgnorant · 08/07/2013 22:58

Try to stay calm but at 40 deg C it's a defo A&E trip. 999, for sure.

CloudsAndTrees · 08/07/2013 22:58

As you are this worried, call OOH. They will let you know if it's ok to let her sleep and see a doctor in the morning, or whether it's something they will want to see.

Step away from google!

Lilithmoon · 08/07/2013 22:59

I agree with NeoMaxi.
Hope she is ok OP.

ShiftyFades · 08/07/2013 23:03

OOH GP, A&E if you get no joy. Give NHS direct a miss in this instance.

Trust your instinct, if you think she's need hospital, take her.

Hope she feels better soon.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 08/07/2013 23:03

Don't risk waiting OP...get her seen. You wont rest anyway....best to get it checked.

ballstoit · 08/07/2013 23:06

Waiting for OOH GP to call back. Thanks for the replies, I always worry they're going to tell me off for wasting their time Blush

Good....I hope they call soon.xxx

LoveSewingBee · 08/07/2013 23:15

Measles?

Initially very high temp and very sore eyes (need sunglasses and/or darkened room to protect eyes). Are you in an area where there is an outbreak?

Hope she gets seen tonight.

Travelledtheworld · 08/07/2013 23:17

They will never tell you off for wasting their time especially when a child is involved ! Good Luck for a quick diagnosis.
And if all is well and you have the time and energy I would drop your MP an email abut the 6 hours waiting time for NHS direct ! That is appalling.

numbum · 08/07/2013 23:19

It could be viral conjunctivitis but I'd definitely get it checked out.

I hope she feels better soon

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 08/07/2013 23:22

Hopefully just hay fever and hot weather but definitely worth checking out. Hope ooh calls back soon but if not then get yourself to a&e.

LoveSewingBee · 08/07/2013 23:26

I don't think hay fever or conjunctivitis will cause such high and persistent fever.

You need her to be seen by a doctor.

MrsEricBana · 08/07/2013 23:32

Yes I agree re A&E - I would take ker along to be on the safe side, but hopefully nothing alarming. Hope she feels much better very soon.

Buzzardbird · 08/07/2013 23:34

Hope your little girl is ok Op Thanks

ballstoit · 08/07/2013 23:44

OOH GP has rung back, he's happy as temperature comes down with paracetamol to leave her for tonight and see her first thing tomorrow. Was really lovely and said ring back straight away if not happy or any further concerns in the night.

She's in with me, near the open window with just a sheet draped over her, as per instructions from GP. Will try to get some sleep now.

Thanks for all your advice, can just about cope with this lone parent shit with the support of Mumsnet.

SybilRamkin · 09/07/2013 09:48

How is your DD this morning? Hope she's feeling better, thinking of you both.

ballstoit · 09/07/2013 22:17

Been to GP, apparently bloodshot eyes are sometimes caused by high temperature. Couldn't find anything to indicate bacterial infection so assuming it's a virus.

She seems better this evening, no paracetamol since lunch and temperature stayed down. She's eaten a bit more today too. Smile

Fingers crossed the other 2 don't catch it in time for holiday next week Wink

Hissy · 09/07/2013 22:24

I don't think you can catch viruses, otherwise i'd be as sick as a dog like DS was last week.

Weirdest thing I ever saw! Raging temp, 40C plus, only just manageable with calpol/ibuprofen on the first days.

His nails and lips went bright purple. Caused by the rapid transit of blood from the extremities.

As far as temp goes, it's all about demeanour.

If a child is floppy, call 999, if they are ok in themselves, try to cool them down, get them to keep hydrated and keep close watch.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 09/07/2013 23:47

Um, Hissy, you know the flu virus? You know how you can catch it? Other viruses are the same... Grin

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 09/07/2013 23:48

Glad dd is on the mend op x
